Message preview on lock screen?

As far as I can tell, under lock screen settings I have the phone setup to show messages on lock screen so I can at least read the first few messages of a text as it comes in (when phone is locked). However, it just pops up and says message, it doesn't allow me to actually see what is in the text. Any ideas what I could be missing?

If using the Samsung (stock) messages app, click More (top right), Settings, Notification, then bottom item is Preview message (says " shows preview of new message on lock screen") . Mine is turned on, and it works.

Are you using a messaging app with a red icon? If you are it's called Verizon Message+ and it's a flaw of the app
