Ugh, So many small differences from my S21 to S22. Now when I open Google Messages, it opens with the word Messages taking up half the screen. My S21 would open with the latest message at the very top of the screen. Here's a screenshot of how it is now, and it's annoying!messages screen shot.jpg

Thats One UI look and been like that since introduction even Samsung message app

Well my S21 didn't do it like that. Neither did my S10. They both opened the Messages app in full list view. Oh well. Minor inconvenience.
Using regular google message it wont show that , google/ Samsung collaboration google message have this Samsung does and have been for awhile

By the way you see the same thing in phone app , contact app, settings and some other Samsung apps

I know I asked samsung why it's like that and they said its part of S22+. My Samsung A31 didn't do that and used identical apps. I don't like it. It's a waste of space.

Agreed. I wish you could get it to automatically snap to the top of your message list. You can do that after it is already open, but not when you first open it , it goes back to that every time you open it. It's annoying.

That's Samsung doing to make ease of one handed use

I noticed the same thing. You need to replace the pre-installed "Messages" app (Samsung collab) with the Google Messages app in Google Play. Just search for Google Messages and you'll see it. Once you've installed it, you will need to make it your default app for SMS messaging.

Then, just be sure that you're using the Google Messages app, and no more oversized header. They are both called "Messages", but the Samsung Messages is the chat bubble with three dots, and the Google Messages is the chat bubble with no dots.

Welcome to AC!
The only thing with that since Google/ Samsung message app is pre installed when u look up Google messages it will take u to the preinstalled colab app , so you cant download it from play store.

If I can download it from play store I would think others can.

Google " google message app for android" it will come up with a link to the app on the play store.

Nope , maybe if you get the APK version
If you have Google/Samsung preinstalled not happening unless you don't ?

What happens when you click on open? Maybe the google app will open.

All I can tell you is when I set up my new phone I downloaded the app and have both. If I open Samsung messages it tells me to use it I must make it default, same thing if I am using the Samsung message app and open google messages.

Maybe the latest update to 13 changed something.

According to that screen Google messages is your default app being used on your phone. Are you saying despite this screen your default app is Samsung messages?
On this screen if you select the second one down the balloon with three dots which is Samsung messages there is no change? It doesn't ask if you want to make default.

I think you are confusing Samsung Messages, an app written entirely by Samsung, and the collaboration version of Google and Samsung that is mostly Google Messages but has the half page startup problem.

There are 3 message apps
Google messages
Google/Samsung message
Samsung

Lot of Samsung s21 and up have Google/Samsung message app preinstalled and Samsung

My devices has both Google/Samsung message app and Samsung preloaded, you can't install Google messages because it has the Google/Samsung colab .

Easy way to know difference between Google/Samsung message app and Google messages is Google/Samsung messages has a big empty page at the top of all messages and Google message app doesn't.

I guess I am lucky as I have a pure Google message app and a pure Samsung message app. By the way my phone is the unlocked Canadian version not associated with any Canadian Telecommunication company other than the sim used.
I also can use either of message apps without problem just prefer Google because all my contacts are listed with Google and not all are in my Samsung contacts.
Using either app I do not see the large header screen and don't use dark mode maybe that is the cause of the problem.
Good luck with solving the problem which might be effecting only a small number of phones.
