Messages history not available after restore - S23 Ultra Android 14

My S22 Ultra died (boot loop), so Samsung Care+ sent me an S23 Ultra as a replacement. I restored my data to the new device but my entire messages history is not displaying. I got the history of my most recent threads (like maybe 10ish threads), but any thread that was older than that is not visible nor is the history accessible. And if I create a new chat with a contact that should have history, it only shows the current message, no history. If I scroll down on my messages app, it just looks like it's trying to refresh but nothing ever happens (this has been days like this so not just a timing issue). I have tried SMS Backup and Restore by SyncTech - the restore completes but skips everything due to duplicate messages (so the message ARE there). I have also cleared cash and app data for Messages and that doesn't change anything either. It's almost as if Messages didn't properly rebuild the database after it was done. Full disclosure, I have a MASSIVE XML file from the SMS backup (like 12 gb). It's a ridiculous number of messages. It seems like they are all ON my phone, but messages is not showing them.

I'm stuck - I'd REALLLY like to avoid having to wipe and restore again. Any suggestions? TIA for the help! (Screenshot below of what my messages app looks like if I scroll down).Screenshot_20250421_093431_Messages.jpg

It looks like it's trying to repopulate again in your screenshot, try going into Samsung messages see if everything shows up there ?

I'll move your question to our s23 Forum

I opened in Samsung Messages and I would say it "KINDA" worked? I can't actively use it - it says it's only displaying history, can't send. (Not that I would want to keep using it). But more threads are showing, but the group texts are sometimes okay and sometimes jacked up as separate convos. And some threads that I started new this week (but had history) only show the new messages not the total history. So it's obv trying to display more - and I can scroll way back. So, I still feel pretty strongly the entire history is there, just not being displayed properly.

Okay once it finishes populating on Samsung messages go back to Google messages and see what happens from there

For a moment I thought we were golden but it stopped refreshing in the same place as before. I switched to Samsung Messages, waited and scrolled WAYY down to the bottom of all of the history I could see (several years worth). It didn't seem as organized as it should be but it seemed to be there (def more than Google Messages). Waited, scrolled around awhile just to give it some time (a few minutes). I then force stopped Google Message and cleared it's cache and data. Then opened it and set as the default again. It refreshed and kept adding threads but then stopped at the same spot as the screenshot I shared.

Might have to give it some time especially if there are many messages to sync again, wait 24hrs see how this progresses, we might have to do same with Samsung messages if this doesn't work with Google's.

Unfortunately no change - still looks like it's trying to "refresh" at the same point. So strange.
