I had the same problem today, quite embarrassing given I was bending the operators ear about giving me a duff phone lol There is a setting on the face of the screen that appears during a call that can be accidently pushed by the ear when making a call. This is the noise reduction which supresses background noise but if its only yourself in the room then your voice will not be heard unless you select speaker function. To deselect noise reduction do the following -
1. Select Phone (green square icon)
2. Left click and select Call Settings
3. Scroll down and deselect Noise Reduction
Hopefully this will help others out in future and save the embarrassment I had today
