MicroSD card question

I just successfully installed my SanDisk 32gb microSD card in my GS3. When I go to Settings>Storage>SD Card, it says there is 29.7 gb available. What happened to the other 2.3 gigs? Seems odd.

Also, do I tap the Format SD Card setting. It says it deletes all data on the SD card including photos etc. When you install the card is some data automatically transferred over to it? Please advise since I'm an ex-iPhone user and have never dealt with microSD cards before.

Thanks.

I think it has to do with labeling. It is 32,000mb probably which is not really 32gb.

You will never see the full space from what the package tells you. There is a bit taken up from formatting mainly. Hard drives are the same way.

OK got it.

But do I need to tap the format SD card setting or leave it be?

The 2 gb is from factory formatting.

I don't know what the labeling is on that Card, but there are 2 ways to describe the size on a chip. Some manufacturers will use 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. Others use 1024 bytes as 1 KB.
