microSD card recommendations?

I don't trust you one bit. I need proof. If you post the results. I will post my INCREDIBLE tracking number ;).

Class ratings specify the minimum write speeds based on "the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied" (Yes, I stole that from Wikipedia). Manufactures must meet or exceed the minimums specified for each class. So yes, there will be wide variances in different cards and different manufactures. The class rating is a misleading indicator on how fast the card really is.

Thank-you.

I received the A-Data card today, and ran the same test as I did before. Results:

Read = 14.69 MB/s
Write = 9.33 MB/s

The Transcend clocked in faster on the read test, but the A-Data write test blew both of the others out of the water, so I ended up going with the A-Data for better all-around performance.

I never thought to run that test. Stock SanDisk class 2 16GB that comes with the Droid:

Read = 16.07 MB/s
Write = 7.44 MB/s

Not sure which one to keep now?

Cory, what application are you using to test the microSD cards? I'd like to try to replicate your tests on a non-brand name card that I ordered to see where it stands.

Also, are you plugging them into a direct USB reader, adapter to SD reader, etc.?

Thanks,
Alex

The easiest app to use is CrystalDiskMark. It's open source (free) and lightweight. If you want to do more elaborate testing you could also use SiSoftware Sandra Benchmark. I am using the SD card slot in my laptop via a micro to SD card adapter.

I don't want to re-open this can of worms but I mentioned I would post the speed results of the 16GB class 2 generic card I got on ebay for $28 shipped.

18.92 MB/s Read
6.73 MB/s Write

However, I'm a technical person and I understand that these numbers are based on sequential reads and writes. Although the A-data class 6 results posted above show a 2.6 MB/s speed advantage for writes (very nice), I'm wondering if the class 6 cards perform even better when used for random smaller writes. So I'm including the 4K results too:

3.278 MB/s Read
0.056 MB/s Write

I'm still very happy with my purchase because I'm going to be mostly using the card to store larger files like movies for travelling and I was just looking for GB/$.

Also, it's worth noting that these tests are being done on my laptop and really these tests need to be run on the phone itself to determine how well the cards work in that application.

I have a class 2 16 gb card in my Storm. The Storm won't be needing it anymore...

If that ain't fast enough, I'll get a faster card.

I don't see why it won't be, though.

I picked up the Class 6 16GB A-Data card myself for the phone. Should be a nice boost in storage and for less than $100, I don't see that it is that much to ensure decent performance.

Even though it has 6.6 - 8gb onboard, I would still recommend the 16gb card. I think it would be easier to manage my music files all in one location that I can remove and slide into my compter with the use of one of those little adaptors. I've been using a 16gb sandisk card for a couple years on my Storm and it has worked great. I guess it should work at least as well on the Incredible :) I plan on saving the onboard memory for video.

from a friend who works at Verizon. . . . . because some apps require some data being stored on the SD card, NOT the internal memory, there will be a promotion going on to allow customers to get a FREE 2 GB memory card when you upgrade or purchase new service on an incredible. he said it will run through may . . .

A-Data 4k test: R=6.071 W=.022

Sandisk Class 2 4k test (card that comes with Moto Droid): R=5.316 W=.008

Will it make that much of a difference to get a class 6 over a class 2 16 GB. After buying the phone and a case I want to save some money. It seems that the class 2 is like half the price of the class 6. I want to cover all my bases. I don't want to wish I had gotten the class 6 later in the future.

Bump. Is it really a noticeable difference? I just want to get the cheapest 16gb card on Amazon.com for my DInc. I'm going to use the card for mostly music. If it's just gonna plain suck that I'll go with one of the better cards.

You will be fine going with one of the less expensive cards, and probably won't notice a difference. In fact the card that alear bought sounds like a fast card at a decent price.
