Microsoft Word and pen input problem

I'm using the latest version of Microsoft Word and have a problem when using the handwriting panel. When I hit the return key in the panel to start a new line the program puts a question mark with a box around it. It's an unrecognized character. The same thing occurs regardless of font.
If I use the normal touch keyboard the problem doesn't occur.
So, I have two questions:
1. Does anyone else have the same behavior?
2. Any suggestions as to a fix?
