I read the "super easy guide" and followed that before I saw your reply.Put your model number, region select check for updates , then download the Rom , extract the Rom with 7zip.
Got stuck after Odin said "pass". Gave option to factory reset/wipe or try again which led to the same screen. Finally booted up but started in Tmobile screen again. Waiting for smart switch to finish up then I'll restart the phone and see but it doesn't seem like it worked. Was not a smooth process. Only thing I didn't see, perhaps because it didn't work right, was

Understand, let me know.Had enough for one evening, will give another shot tomorrow.
If you want go from carrier to unlocked firmware you need odin 3.13.1 prince comsey and this will factory resetTried again, same end result. Odin shows it was successful but the phone gets stuck and requires factory reset and then the phone is exactly the same. I downloaded off the samfirm website, I can't get the samfirm tool to update to show the 981 firmware, just gives an error. I found another site that has the vzw firmware but you have to join and pay for it. Luckily I have my note still so I can smart switch back and forth which is great but it is a pain. I found a 981u1 firmware that has the vzw version but it didnt work at all, Odin failed within seconds. Is it possible the phone is locked to Tmobile and can't be changed??? The firmware I am attempting to use is "SM-G981U_G981USQU1ATBN_G981UOYN1ATBN_CHA_10_5".
Sorry, I am just at a loss here. Making things more difficult is my personal computer won't recognize my phone so I have to bring my work computer home and I'm a little apprehensive about downloading from some of these sites that I have googled what I think is the correct firmware.
What error you get in odin?
Retry or factory reset ? Where did u see that? When using the one I listed there are no errors, it appears to work fine except when the phone restarts it has the option to retry or factory reset.
Ahh recoveryIt looks like the same screen as when you start up holding the up and power button, how you get into the download mode except there are only 2 options.
Very strange , it should of took you to a screen that say optimizing 20 of 400 apps then boot up to lock screen.Correct. I tried "retry" multiple times and finally did reset which got the phone properly started up.
