Missing flash so bad on my nexus 7.

One thing I cannot stand is the lack of flash support. I understand there are work arounds but it sucks. Last night I tuned into android central to watch the podcast and to my embarrassment I couldn't watch it on my fancy nexus 7 because it doesn't support flash. I eventually figured out how to get it after it had been recorded using RSS feed and Google read. I had to use my Gnex to watch it live. The same problem constantly arises while browsing web pages with videos inserted.
Why couldn't it just play flash like my galaxy nexus.

Ask Adobe. It's not Google's fault, Flash isn't their product.

Of course, the cynical amongst us might suggest it's because Flash sucks.

Adobe no longer supports Mobile Flash. Period. Jellybean no longer officially supports Flash. You can simply sideload the Flash apk and use a browser that supports Flash. Simple as that.

Exactly. Flash is an awful program on every platform. I am happy to see it's demise. The way I look at is if a site doesn't have an app and hasn't moved to html5 then I am just not going to waste my time.

Are there specific directions on this? Does it require rooting?

No need for root. Click this link from your device:

Adobe_Flash_Player_11.1.apk

Click the download link. It'll download the Flash apk to your device. Simply click on the download notification in your notification pane once it's done downloading, and follow the directions.

Be sure to go into Security options in Settings, and check the box for "Unknown Sources" before you download, so it'll be able to load the apk. Then just download the Flash supporting browser of your choice, and you're good to go.

I did it!! Going to use Mozilla for now on just like I do on PC. Flash is working great. Mozilla definitely runs smoother than chrome on my device and scrolling is much better. Never really enjoyed chrome. Love my default browser on Gnex tho its a shame they didn't run that on Next 7. Thanks again!

html5...adobe needs to kill flash one and for all. Sites need to move on, complain to their webmaster.

I've just tried to do this and when I try to install Firefox it says it isn't compatible with my device. Not sure where I'm going wrong...

Abridged Version for those that want a less wordy explanation:

1) Obtain an older flash .apk, a newer flash .apk, and the firefox .apk. All of which can be snagged from the internet, your phone using Airdroid or a similar app, or at the bottom of this post.

2) Install the older Flash .apk, then update to the newer one. (below are numbered in the order that one should flash them, with 1 being older and 2 being newer)

3) After (and only after) installing and updating flash, install the firefox .apk. (remember flash is not always on by default in firefox. If you want the default browser experience, you need to go into the firefox settings, find plugins and select "enabled"

4) Enjoy!

Unabridged for those of you that need more in-depth help (includes me from time-to-time):

1) Obtain an older adobe flash player .apk, a newer Adobe Flash Player .apk, and the Mozilla Firefox .apk. All of which can be snagged from the internet, your phone using Airdroid or a similar app, or at the bottom of this post. Essentially you are just getting an older version of flash player and a newer version of flash player.

2) You can download the .apk file directly to your tablet (skip to step 3), or to a computer. If it was on a computer, plug in your tablet and use my computer (or mac equivalent) and stick it in the download folder (just for me to save time writing).

3) On your tablet, go into settings and open security. Make sure to check the box for "Unknown Sources". You get a warning basically saying Google can't guarantee that apps not from Google Play are safe...common sense.

4) On your tablet, install a file manager app (i.e. File Manager HD). On your tablet, open the file manager. Go to the download folder, click on the older flash player .apk (or Adobe Flash Player_1.apk if it was from down below). Click on install, and do the same for the newer flash player .apk (or Adobe Flash Player_2.apk).

5) After (and only after) installing and updating flash (step 4), install a browser that supports flash (aka the firefox .apk using the same method).

6) If you are using firefox, flash is not enabled automatically. Change this by going into the settings, find plugins, and select enabled.

7) Enjoy!

Note: firefox isn't required, it's just what I used.

Note: I used the website http://www.androidcentral.com/wordpress-android-updated-include-support-nexus-7-danish-language to demonstrate it working in the screenshots.

Update 7/17/2012: So I found that when replicating this, I was having trouble getting it to work. So I tinkered and found that installing an older flash first, updating to the new one, and then installing firefox was the ticket. Updated the post to include a better step-by-step and .apk links for flash and firefox

That's how I did it. I installed apk #1 the apk#2 then went into the market and installed firefox

I sideloaded the flash.apk (11.1) and installed it straight from /sdcard. I personally don't care for Chrome so I went ahead and installed the AOSP Browser.apk first and I have to say I like it much better than Chrome! You have to be rooted to do this.

I hope more people convert their Flash to HTML5.

Yes, yes - we all get it. Flash is terrible, blah, blah, blah...

However, until HTML5 actually becomes the default and de facto video translation language on the internet, there's no point on banging on about Flash and how any right-minded internet user should abandon it. If even Apple (with all the power it and it's iPhones can muster) couldn't coerce the internet community to stop using it, lowly general consumers will hardly have sway.

In the meantime, OSs and their browsers should maintain their abilities to use Flash (that's not entirely Adobe's fault on that front), or users must simply put up with a substandard use of the net.
