You don't mention which carrier you use. Some of the carriers' messaging apps will give you the ability to restore messages from their server.
For example, in Verizon's Message+, hit the Settings menu, then Account, and finally Restore Messages. You'll get the choice to restore from your SD card or 90 days of messages from their server.
Your carrier's app may have the same feature. Oh, and at least on Verizon's app, it works even if you don't normally use the carrier app.
