MKBHD really dislikes the Pixel 4/XL

This is exactly the kind of thinking people derided as ‘iSheep’ use. If it’s expensive/overpriced and has an Apple logo on it, it’s better than everything else. At least look at how good the individual devices are!

Buying an iPhone 11 Pro because it’s a great phone? Sure (because it is). But buying it because it’s expensive and has an Apple logo?
Oh , absolutely. Those are exactly the references that I was thinking of! It's also a cult with an overpriced prices and overpriced marketing. Also, closed off ecosystem, and closed off UI.

The top selling iPhone over the last few quarters has been the Xr. I believe only a tiny amount of people buy the most expensive phone to “show off”. Most people are looking for value.

To be honest EMUI has gotten a lot better than what it was, so it should no longer be a dealbreaker. And if you don’t like custom skin UIs that OEMs use, just install a launcher (like Evie). Being able to install launchers and customise them is one of the great things about Android.

As for Samsung, personally I have no problems with their autofocus but they do need to stop smudging detail.

Honestly I do not think it is an autofocus issue with Samsung I think it is a shutter speed issue. I think that the main camera module in the S10/Note 10 is the same as the S9 and Samsung's special sauce is just not as good as Googles. Said this on another thread, I think that where possible they try and keep the ISO as low as possible which requires them to keep shutter speed lower too. Looking at the exif of a few photos vs. the P30 pro and iPhone my S10 always had a lower shutter speed and ISO for a given scene, so I think they are just relying on the OIS too which of course is zero use if there is any movement.

That is my guess anyway........

I agree...the iPhone XR was a brilliant move by Apple. Most Apple iPhone users are perfectly reasonable people...I was describing the thinking of the annoyingly vocal minority.

And @eric002 there are benefits to the Apple walled ecosystem...mostly that it/you have more control over privacy/data, you can be surer about (he apps’) security and the cross-system/device software integration is brilliant (something which Android brands are somewhat attempting semi-successfully). Whether that is enough to make up for much less choice, customisation etc is up to the individual.

It seems Apple may be finally learning they can’t only sell top end (read expensive) devices.

Apple are moving into services so they just have to have a cheaper option

Yeah!
Get on that Apple TV+

Right now, that's only a fanboy subscription!

It isn't ? Anyone can pay for it ($5 a month)? Only people who buy Apple get it for free so how does that make them a fanboy if they obviously like the products due to buying them and getting a bonus for it? I mean it isn't like they're the first to do that XD.

Yep. But I was watching a smartphone awards of 2019. But that's the same thing. I understand that everyone likes wide angle lenses I don't need a wide angle lens. As far as the battery. If you buy the 4XL you'll have a good battery. as far as the design elements. Google is not a hardware company they are a software company. Do not expect it to be all shiny like a Samsung Galaxy phone in general. Google phones have never been gimmicky phones that's why we all love them.

I think pixel phones will always appeal to a niche buyer. I wish weren't true but probably is.

Trying to look at it from a YouTube creator's point of view, I can see why a lot of them - not just Marques - would have liked for the Pixel 4 to have a wide-angle lens.

Best phone camera for the masses right now is Iphone 11 pro. Pixel doesn't have that crown any longer. And that is coming from a person with pixel 3 XL as main driver.

I'd argue for "the masses", taking a step-down to the regular iPhone 11 is enough for most people.

It's weird because before the iPhone X, Apple's "top-end" phone was around the current iPhone 11 price.

A lot of people want to pay high prices to make themselves look better off than those around them.

If you bought an iPhone 11 pro and only hang out with people with the 7/8+ you better believe you'd get that inflated sense of self esteem....!

Remember when owning a BlackBerry made you look "cool"?

If we're talking strictly US-market, these higher prices are sort of irrelevant. Brand-new, the differences are basically a cup of "specialty" coffee once a month. This whole iPhone as a status symbol is over (and to be honest, has really been over for a long time now).

I don't know if this is just me aging but I find it quite hilarious.

flagship phones have cost way too much money for a couple of years now. That's the hard truth. Just because I had the latest processor and now with the upcoming phones in 2020 having 5G they're going to cost $1,100? That's nonsense! It's like a car payment for a phone! I mean it is true that smartphones have become many computers in our pockets but that's been the truth for a long time now as well. I'm glad that all these manufacturers are now realizing that their phones are getting way too too expensive. I really hope that the pixel 3A and the new Pixel 4A phones (when it comes out) continue to sell extremely well!

The Pixel 3A, Galaxy S10e, and iPhone 11 are probably more than good enough got 99% of all people.

But people, again going US-centric here, the difference between an $800 phone and $1100 phone is about $13 per month. That's basically 3, maybe 4 orders at Starbucks.

The way most people buy phones in the US makes it so easy to get something you don't really need.

Yes, and the other truth about the matter especially for Apple is the fact that most people like status symbols. Yes, there are other cheaper phones out [here. My mother loves her 3aXL. Most people don't buy those cheaper phones though... Unfortunately... Yeah when it just comes down to a monthly payment, a lot of people can afford that price difference

I'm gonna wholeheartedly disagree with you here. Calling people who choose iPhones over Android a cult is so silly. Several years ago that might have been funny, but those days are long gone. Honestly after reading through several Pixel 4 threads Pixel fans seem to be much worse about defending Google than Apple users are to iPhones. Pixel fanboys are the new Apple fanboys.

Yep yep I'll give you that my fault. Fair enough. Everyone is a fanboy in their own rights.
