Mobile Data Performance

Hi Android Central,

This is my first post. I'm having trouble with mobile data on Verizon. I use ThinkorSwim trading software. It works great so long as the data connection is excellent, like when on a WLAN. But since the students in my college town came back mobile data performance has suffered. Now ThinkorSwim barely works. I tried another trading application from TDAmeritrade and it works fine. So does ThinkorSwim on a Verizon iPhone4. Perhaps related, Pandora cuts out frequently.

The Android version of ThinkorSwim is Java based. Any ideas about what I can do to improve network performance on my Fascinate?

Hey Tom, and welcome to the forums!

In regards to your data performance, there are some things to look at/try.

First, let me say, if your area doesn't have 4g, and Verizon is working on getting it going, or just got it up, it can disrupt the 3g service some. As do pesky iPhone users.. :)

Let me also say that the Fascinate has a known, weak cell radio. More than likely placed there to reduce the SAR radiation level to the user. A trade off some Fascinate users would of like to had an option of when we purchased the phone. However that's not the case..the radios weak.

To check your signal strength at any given point you can go to settings-about phone-status and see your numerical signal strength. -75 to -85 is excellent, -86 to -96 is good, above -100 is poor.

Some things to try:

1. Be sure to reboot your phone at least once a day. In the morning or at night.

2. You can toggle airport mode on and off, and your Fascinate will re-acclimate itself to the nearest cell tower. I like to do this when I go to work, as it's 12 miles from my home. If signal is poor give it a try.

3. Do a battery pull. This will reset some internal functions, and may be what you need.

4. Dial *228 option 1 then repeat and do option 2.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply. I've done a a lot of that. Signal strength runs from -71 to -85. I've pulled the battery on numerous occasions. I've rebooted plenty and dialed *228. I haven't toggled the airport mode. I'm wondering about a Rooting and getting a custom ROM and Kernel. Either that or I'll have to get an iPhone (yuck).
