I am 3 weeks into owning my first smartphone, the GS3 of course, and am loving every bit of it so far.. I have recently discovered just how much faster WiFi is than 3g in my area, and I am curious if it's advantageous to shut off mobile data? And if I were to shut it off, what exactly does it shut off? Would I still be able to make/receive phone calls, surf the web, check apps etc? If this has been covered before, please direct me to thread. Either way, thanks in advance!

When you can use WiFi, by all means use it. As for mobile data it's just that. Data... WiFi replaces 3g (mobile data) when connected so it is safe and advantageous to turn off mobile data when connected to WiFi as WiFi takes less battery power and is as you noticed faster.

Turning off mobile data has nothing to do with your phone signal. So you will continue to be able to make and receive phone calls and text messages.
