Props to this guy. He took a HTC HD2 car mount, removed one side and now doesn't have to wait six months for the official EVO car mount.

No it's not, look at the supports near the bottom of the phone, kind of close to the charging port.

Whats up with the car dock app not switching to landscape mode?

It must not be a straight through microUSB circuit on the car dock. There has to be a circuit that the device detects and then automagically enters into the car dock mode. It could be that the circuit present on the HD2 car dock is not recognized by the EVO and so is disregarded, keeping the EVO in its portrait mode.
