mostly love d3, but random reboot + boot sound a major problem

Howdy,

I have had the D3 since release, and mostly love it. However, a combination of 2 problems is making me crazy.

1) There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the *DROID* sound at boot. It does this even if sd card notivications are off, and if the phone is in silent mode. On my OG Droid I could turn this off before I rooted. Is there any way to do this on the D3?

2) I am starting to get random reboots.

So, for example, the phone randomly rebooted last night and woke me by yelling DROID at me. The phone was charging, in airplane mode, with wifi off. The reboots would be tolerable if I didn't have the boot sound happening when I am sleeping, in a meeting, or whatever, when I have the phone suppposedly silenced.

Any ideas for a work around?

Thanks,
SRV

I had the same problem.

Here is what I did to fix it:

First I suspected the problem was related to Wifi, because the phone would reboot it seemed when i was walking out of, or into the range of my synced wifi logons.

I did a google search and found others had the same problem. Apparently there is a bug when the Wifi connections sync onto the phone with your google account.

So to fix this I went into the wifi settings and did "Forget All wifi connections".

After re-adding the ones i use frequently (work, home, a coffee shop,) I haven't had a single reboot in over 60 hours, compared to the 6 or 7 i was getting per day prior to this).

Hope this helps you also.

Thanks. I guess it is worth a try, although my reboot happened after the phone had been on the charger for several hours, with both wifi off and airplane mode on. I don't see how it could have been trying to do anything at that point.

I haven't tested this on the D3 yet but if it is like the TBolt the boot animation sound is linked to the ringer volume when the phone is rebooted.

Thanks. Like I said, silent mode wasn't helping, but just now I tried rebooting with the ringer barely audible, and the boot noise was still full volume.

I wasn't sure what you silenced. For example silencing media does not automatically silence the ringer and vice versa. It's possible there is a software glitch then (which might be fixed in the first MR) in this specific build then.

Re: mostly love d3, but random reboot + boot sound a major proble

So, forgetting all of my wifi connections didn't help, because the damned phone rebooted in the middle of the night again, with wifi off and in airplane mode. I am wondering if is simply the white noise app I am using (Chroma Doze). Usually I sleep with a fan going, but I am on travel, and so I am using a white noise app. I would loop a white noise mp3, but the D3 has a distinct pause in the playback every time an mp3 loops in the player, whereas the app provides continuous white noise. I've uninstalled Chroma Doze to see if that stops the reboots.

Really the biggest problem here is that Motorola is forcing us to have a phone that boots with a loud annoying noise even if the phone ringer is silenced. There are all sorts of reasons that is idiotic (not just 3am reboots). There is no discreet way to boot this phone.

You could change the primary notification ringtone to something else less annoying... That's what I did. It's kind of a bummer there is no way to turn off just the start-up ringtone like on the OG Droid. That's on my list of minor little letdowns, along with no dedicated camera button.

Thanks - that sounds promising. Where would I set that on the D3?

If I go to
Settings -> Sounds
the "Phone Ringtone" and "Notification Ringtone" are already set to my own non-default choices. Where is the setting you're referring to?

Thanks

Re: mostly love d3, but random reboot + boot sound a major proble

That is what I was referring to... But I just did a restart and it gave me the DROID sound on start up.

Oh well, sorry it didn't help.

Re: mostly love d3, but random reboot + boot sound a major proble

I'm sure it's just like it was on the Droid Pro, impossible to remove without rooting and renaming the sound file.

Re: mostly love d3, but random reboot + boot sound a major proble

Isn't there an application in the market called Silent Boot? I have the TBolt and was able to use that. Works well and doesn't need to be rooted.

Ok I talked to motorola and they said to: 1: use a different charger
2: try a different outlet (where you plug the charger)
3: turn the phone off and remove the battery, then turn it back on after you put the battery back in of course!
4: I forget.
5: do a factory reset, which should prob fix it.
