Moto G7 problems after update to Android 10.

My phone seems to be burning through the battery faster since it updated to Android 10. Anyone else have this problem? I check the battery usage figures, but I don't know how that can fix the problem.

Also, my Verizon Messages+ no longer alerts me with sound or vibration. In the settings they are all set correctly, but nothing when I get a text. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and still silence. Any fixes?

Whenever I've run any updates, I typically reboot the phone three times after the update. I know, they say it shouldn't be, but after years of dealing with OTA and wired updates, I think it takes a few "kicks" to get everything settled in.

It might be a little old-fashioned, but I've had a lot of different phones, and seem to have had fewer problems after updates. New updates do seem like they burn through a little faster, in many cases, though.

Did you just do the update, or was it a while ago? Battery can drain a little bit faster right after an update, since the phone has to optimize apps and do other things to finalize the update.

I have similar issues with 2 separate Moto G7 phones - After the Android 10 update. Greatly reduced cellular and wifi connectivity, and (probably because of the perceived signal strength) accelerated battery drain.

Thanks all for responses. I got it a week or so ago. Not only did it kill notifications in my Messages+ app, my Gentle Alarm app has the same problem. One set alarm won't come on at all. The next one shows up on the screen but no sound (doesn't make for an effective alarm). Yet the native clock alarm works. I rebooted (soft) my phone 3-4 times since the update and still have the problems.

I haven't noticed any difference in the receptivity of either cellular or wifi.

Do we still do wipe cache? Any instructions for the G7?

Welcome to the forums. Recent Moto devices have dual A/B partitions eliminating the cache partition, so there's no option for that wipe.

Android 10 introduced new levels of notifications and some apps remained as 'Other' after the update. Maybe this is the reason why your are not getting sound of vibration from those apps.

Just in case, go to settings - apps - select the Message app - notifications - tap 'Incoming messages' (the text, not the toggle) and make sure that it's set as 'Important'.

Also, which sound did you select for this app?

Thank you for your help. I am using Message+, which is Verizon's fancier messaging app. I turned Messages app off for notifications yesterday and it didn't help. I am on a similar looking page under setting>apps>message+ and it shows "Notifications" and then the subheading says "~1 notification per day". I tap on the Notifications text, like you say. Then I get a list of notifications I can turn on or off (e.g., New message, new driving mode, failed messages, ....). All of these are turned on. So then I tap on the text of "New message notifications" and it takes me to a page similar to your second example above. Except it doesn't say "Important". It says "Alerting" or the other option is "Silent". I have "Alerting" activated. Sorry I don't know how to take screen shots and post them here. The sound I was using was a custom one but I switched to one that came with the phone just to make sure. Sounds are on my SD card I believe.

Maybe there was a problem reading the SD card and something got stuck in the settings. Have you already tried changing the default sound and vibration in settings - sound & vibration - SMS? Select only stock sounds for now until the problem is fixed.

Also, do you get a notification and the status bar icon when you get a new message?

Yes, the messages appear on the pop up screen. I do have it on a default sound and no sound. And I get notified on my Bluetooth.

Running out of ideas. I did a little search and found lots of reports about this same problem with Verizon Messages+. It seems this app has had notification problems on many different devices for a long time.

This is the closest to a solution, a bit old but worth trying.

Thanks for your help. Everything is set up the way it is supposed to be. Still no vibration or sound. Chalk it up to a defective app. It was working just fine until update to Android 10.

On another issue I raised, I did notice my data and battery was burning up faster since update to 10. My phone would even get warm thru the cover the battery was working so much. I looked at app data usage and Firefox had used over 1 gig. I turned off something to nix background something for Firefox. I'll see if that helps both battery and data usage. There seems to be a lot of new toggle switches for apps in Android 10.

That was my last bullet about the Message+ app, sorry.

It's very strange that Firefox used so much data in the background, this could be one of the reasons for your battery drain. I've never used it with Android so no much help there either. I've been using Brave as my main browser for a long time and I'm very happy with it.

Welp, I finally found the answer to my Message+ issue. I had to make the stock texting app the default first, and then make Message+ the default. Now all is good with that app. And I hope I have figured out the battery/data drain by turning off background activity in Firefox. I appreciate these forums, even though it seems Androidcentral has made them harder to find.

Regarding Brave, I went to check it out but it looks like you get ads with the browser. Is that the case?

Excellent news! Glad you get it fixed and thanks for the follow up, it'll be very helpful for other users with a similar problem.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean that you still see ads in some pages? Or do you mean the Brave Rewards ads? This can be disabled easily in Brave settings.

I saw some people in the comments were complaining about seeing ads and not being able to skip them. So the app doesn't put ads in the browser?

Only if you join the Brave Rewards club. It's quite intersecting, actually, but I disabled that option.

I seem to be one of the unlucky people for whom the Android 10 messed up their G7. My data usage is 2x as much and battery life barely makes it thru the day now. Reception of signal seems to be weaker as my graph is a bar or two lower. I've rebooted numerous times since the update.
