Moto X+1 May Not Have Stereo Speakers

I use my speakerphone for the many times a week that I can't find my bluetooth. I don't find the moto x speakers all that great for speaker phone use.

How far away are you from your phone? For me, the speaker is plenty loud.

I think it is extremely rude and obnoxious when people use their phones to play music or watch videos without using headsets.

I suppose you're right if you're a solitary person living in a library world.

There are obvious places where you shouldn't be disruptive but there are plenty of people who share videos not only in the confines of their house (as you suggest is the only place we're allowed to share videos) but in public parks, sporting events, malls, coffee shops and just about anywhere where people talk, laugh and share conversations with each other.

Coffee shops? Yeah, like I said: rude and obnoxious. Nobody not seated with you wants to hear the garbage playing on your phone and they shouldn't have to.

People also "talk, laugh, and share conversations" on public transportation and airplane flights. Playing a video or song through the speakers on your phone would be similarly inappropriate in those situations.

Rather pathetic that having consideration for others is considered living in a "library world". Honestly, someone who thinks that sounds like an entitled child.

If you use a coffee shop as your home base to do work or read because you have no other place you can't expect everyone to shut up and cater to your agenda.

Like I said: entitled child.

Maybe the people seated at other tables want to converse without your distractions.

By the looks of your avatar photo and your hatred for public places with all their "distractions" you should probably stay away from them or use those handy headphones you say you always have on you because those people will always be there and some will have worse things like a screaming baby instead of a stereo Moto X :)

some will have worse things like a screaming baby
there really is nothing worse than this. Parents need to remove themselves and their screaming baby from restaurants, etc. Last week in a shoe store a toddler was having a meltdown and his id iot mom wouldn't take him outside and made the rest of us suffer through her spawn's entire tantrum. Some parents have no couth at all.

Personally i don't see how listening to a video at an appropriate sound level is any worse than having to hear other people's conversations especially if there is raucous laughter.

Let's please try to get back to and remain with the topic. Thanks!

If the Moto G has a 5 inch display that makes me hopeful that the Verizon Droid Turbo will at least match that. I would presume the X+1 will follow the same suite.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (Verizon)

Wouldn't surprise me to see "Turbo" go 5.2" or 5.9".

So here's an interesting contradiction. The Moto X spec sheet describes the audio as "Front-facing and at bottom." This suggests it only has one speaker at the bottom, and thus not stereo. Phil says as much in his hands-on write-up:

  • The new Moto X looks like it has stereo speakers out front like the Moto G. But in fact the top one's merely the earpiece, and the bottom serves as the speaker. Both are raised slightly. And they're part of the trim color you'll choose in Moto Maker, as is the ring around the Motorola logo in the dimple on the back.
  • That single speaker is pretty good, and pretty loud. But it's still not as good as what you get from HTC's BoomSound. (But what is?)
Over at Gizmodo however, Brent Rose claims they are stereo, loud, and compared side-by-side with the HTC One M8, just as good:

"The audio is absolutely fantastic. Moto did a ton of work on the two front-facing speakers and they are simultaneously very loud and very clear. The Moto X started shouting turn by turn directions at my on a loud, crowded Chicago street, and not only could I hear it clearly, but I kind of jumped a little. I listened to some music on the new Moto X and compared it to the HTC One (M8), which had the best sound of any smartphone. As far as I could tell, the Moto X was at least as good, and maybe even better. Really killer."

So are they stereo? Or has Moto just tweaked the audio software to give that impression? Honestly it doesn't really matter to me just as long as they're loud and clear, which seems to be the case. It's certainly possible that Gizmodo is mistaken, but I find it a little hard to believe that a tech journalist would get such a feature so wrong, especially when comparing it side-by-side with a device known for its excellent, stereo speakers. But maybe that's why I prefer AC for my Android coverage.

Yeah I noticed that too. I also noticed all the other reviews like from The Verge say nothing about the speakers.

Those are marketing people with marketing reasons for not putting stereo speakers on the X. Noise canceling mics doesn't preclude you from also using stereo speakers. But cutting costs does.

I'm not saying I agree with them. But this is undisputed proof of not having stereo speaker

The Moto G I hear is slightly bigger with stereo speakers albeit a smaller screen size

I would like to have stereo. I'm sure the single bottom speaker is loud, but you cannot duplicate stereo with 1 speaker

Thank you for clearing this up. I have also read many conflicting reports from other outlets who claimed the speakers on the front were stereo. Of course those were either very vague or statements just thrown in while giving initial impressions.

I believe Phil was the first to definitively state that the new Moto X used a bottom mono speaker and the top was merely an earpiece. Insight like that is what makes this site "go to" when it comes to android devices.

I am disappointed the Moto G has stereo speakers while the X doesn't however I don't believe it to be a deal breaker. Now the camera quality on the other hand is a horse of a different color. :)

There's a valid point that a phone might not provide enough separation for realistic stereo. On the other hand, even a front mono speaker is better than a rear one for speakerphone calls, games, videos, etc. The reason people get so POed at others who crank their phones to listen to something is that the phone's speaker isn't pointed at the user, it's pointed at the general public, who's going to hear it a lot better than the user will.

Front stereo > Front mono > Rear mono.
