Moto x (1st generation) after 5.1 update, camera is not working

I have updated Moto X (1st Generation) after rollout in India. after two days, camera stopped working suddenly.

Whenever I start camera, it says "Camera error, Please restart camera".

I have done following things without success...

1. Restarted camera and phone several times
2. Uninstalled updates of camera and tried
3. Installed third party camera from play store (Google camera), still got error.
4. Disabled the basic camera app and tried opening google camera, didn't work.

Any help on solving my issue is highly appriciated.

Thank you,
Balu

Re: Moto x (1st generation) after 5.1 update, camera is not working

Typically, this has happened when I have been trying to use snapchat, the camera app, and a third-party camera at the same time. I usually resolve this by rebooting the phone. If that doesn't work try wiping the phone, which I doubt will help. Wiping the phone is good practice whenever you install a major android update. Often fixing issues with apps and battery life.

Hi,

I have tried wiping cache parttion too... didn't help.

I have created a new user [lollipop feature] with new id, and in that login camera is working normal. No idea what is casuing issue with my Id.
Read that skype interfering with camera app, I don't have that installed in my phone.

Balu,
I was having a similar problem. Same error message. My camera would usually start and I would see a dark image or maybe even a full image, but it would freeze up and the "Camera error. Please restart camera" message would appear. I did not have the Android 5.1 update, so I believe it was hardware related. Maybe your issue is coincidental and not related to the update.

I saw on the Moto forum that a possible fix for rear camera problems is to squeeze the phone around the camera to reseat the connector. Seems like a simple fix, too good to be true. Well, I just tried it, pressing around the camera and on the camera lens itself. I pressed firmly, but not crazy hard.

So far, my camera is working normally! I need to give it a day or two to confirm, but before I did that, the camera was in freeze-up mode and now it isn't. Give it a try--it can't hurt. Best of luck.

I just have to confirm that pressing around the rear lens fixed my camera. Thanks ESPOKANE!!
Someone should tell motorola to add this suggestion to their scripts

hello guys,

can any one please post photo or a drawing or a write description of where exactly to press, to fix this camera issue.

thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for this fix! Ive been going through all the hardware and other recommended fixes and came up blank. Reseating the camers worked like a charm! You've: saved me the hassle of getting a new phone right away. :)

I just did the pressing and my camera started working again. I will see if it keeps working. I got so frustrated I ordered the Moto G4 and plan on giving this to my daughter.

Thanks, squeezing around the camera worked for me. You do have to squeeze pretty firmly. I just made sure the screen was off and squeezed in all directions around the camera, and once lightly on the camera itself. Felt some ... very light creaks? is the best way to describe it. Mine stopped working randomly while on a camping trip which bummed me out because I missed some picture opportunities as a result and wasn't looking forward to replacing the phone yet (everything else is too big!!!).

Thanks so much for this solution..it really worked for me..for guys who are facing issues..put your mobile (screen down) on a soft cloth and then just press it little hard near the camera..give it a couple of tries..it worked for me after 2-3 times..hope it works for everyone..
Thanks

Well I have got the same problem with a Moto X 2013, with Android 5.1.
I cannot say if it is related to a software update.
It started with some freezing of the Camera App and then the back side Camera disappeared completely (no longer possible to switch and the flash cannot be used anymore).
It tends to be OK with the front camera (selfie), once the other one is ignored.
I have considered both hardware and software.
With software most of all the tricks given within forum have been attempted: emptying cache, wiping, even reinitialization of the phone - nothing worked.
With hardware:
-squeezing the phone on the back side has given the illusion it could be effective (the back camera was restored, but only for some minutes).
-I changed the flash (I anticipated something wrong in it could impact on the camera behaviour)
-I changed the camera itself for a new one.
Well each time something is changed on the hardware (open the phone, disconnect) makes the camera recognized again when powering up the phone, but an action as simple as switching to the front camera, or exiting software makes it hang.
Hanging of the back camera goes with hanging of the flash application.
I suspect the things are linked to some native sofware issues; however everything appears updated and really I don't know how to fix it. The version of the camera software is 5.011.17. Or it is hardware not concerning camera devices.
Also running the phone with only the back camera (front camera and flash unplugged) produced freezing after being recognized.
Now I am attempting with a third party software camera. I don't know if it can be a solution.
We don't see so much comments within forums about these issues over the last year. Out of hope?
Thanks for your help.

I tried pressing on my phone around the camera, face down on a soft cloth. But still no rear camera.
Can you please send me the Motorola forum where you have seen this issue?

Thank you.

I think u might want to press the whole back of your phone.. To tighten up yhe connections. Its a bit silly solution but i use it to fix mine all the time. At first i thought it was the software bug.. But i
Don't think it is. As I've tried almost every rom. So try pressing the back of your phone gently..

@Espokane, Thanks a lot this trick worked for me...I was thinking so much to fix it, didnt knew it was so simple, really try it no harm !!

What I did,

I pressed on Lense couple of times- Did not work !!

Then tried pressing around the Lense 3-4 light to medium presses , Voila !! IT WORKED..........:-) Awesome trick ..thanks again.

Well, thank you so much! After reading many blogs, it seems to be a simple fix. Moto team can't even tell their users to apply this fix. Lol! Camera is working fine now!
