Moto X 2014 Leather or wood?

Re: Leather or wood?

My leather wallet has held up for longer than I've ever used a smart phone. So my guess is the leather will hold up fine. No, it won't look brand new. But it will look nice, and feel nice, and perhaps even smell nice.

I'm sad that this phone is too large for me, but I think it was a nice idea to play with materials that look and feel good in the hand. Specs always go out of date, but things that feel nice continue to feel nice.

Re: Leather or wood?

I don't know why they don't make the backs user-swappable. I could see buying several variations. And they could come out with new ones during the year. Seems like a lost profit opportunity, if you ask me.

Re: Leather or wood?

I usually don't keep phones longer than a year at max so resale is big. The main disadvantage I can see with leather is that the resale will be lower than the wood. I could be wrong, but I would imagine the phone would look much more used.

Re: Leather or wood?

I'm laughing at all the people worrying about scratching leather and caring for it. One of my favorite possessions is a worn torn and faded leather jacket. Unlike plastic and metal, a well used leather product is SEXY.

Re: Leather or wood?

I'm not really into Android, but the customizing that we can get is really selling me.

I love the different types of wood we can get.

that leather looks like it can get really bitched up easy.

Re: Leather or wood?

I think if you get leather you may as well get your name engraved too. I think resale value will be 0.

See? Nothing says I've been out on the Australian apocalypse, gunning down raiders for fuel or surviving the Thunder dome like leather. Whoever owns that moto x is one BMF. I surely wouldn't want to mess with them. Resale value? Pfft. Who needs resale value when you got survivability value?

Re: Leather or wood?

There's also the possibility of reconditioning and cleaning the leather like you would other leather products. Being on an electronic device will no doubt present challenges, but I suspect someone will come up with a good way to do so once the phone is in people's hands. If you're really worried about resale value, just stick it in a case (and accept that you paid a premium for something you'll never see or touch).

As Clocks suggested, the leather back is like engraving. It's not designed for phone hoppers, but for people who want to make the phone their own. I'm tempted to stamp mine with "Rich Corinthian Leather." :p

Re: Leather or wood?

I'm loving the look of the natural leather. I'm not worried about skuffs and scratches because I think it will enhance the look. What I worry about long term is stain from the oils on my fingers. Since you text to hole the phone the same way all the time, your fingers will always be touching it in the same place.

I'll probably get it anyway.

Re: Leather or wood?

I have the ebony wood back for the Moto X (2013) and although I love the look and feel of it, I'm not sure if I want wood again, only because I want to try something different. Not too big of a fan of leather, but I'd have to see and feel it in person first. I may just go with a custom color route, but if all else isn't satisfying, I'd be happy with wood again

Re: Leather or wood?

I've got to go with leather myself. I never really wanted a wood back when I bought my OG Moto X, but I'm really happy Motorola is doing leather for this new phone. I love the idea of how premium a leather backed phone with an aluminum band will feel in the hand. I definitely will not put a case on my new Moto X when I pick it up. (Not sure when that will be)

Re: Leather or wood?

I want a black front and bamboo back. All the bamboo pics I've seen have been on white face models, but I don't like seeing the IR sensors, camera, etc. I hope they have MotoMaker out day 1 for the unlocked version.

Re: Leather or wood?

Idk now. After the guys talking about how nice the leather is on the podcast I kind of want leather.

Re: Leather or wood?

Lol, I loving the dark and bamboo back.

I'm torn between the Moto X, Sony Xperia Z3, and the S 5.

Re: Leather or wood?

I had the walnut back on the first X and loved the way it looked. The leather option is what has the new X at the top of my list. The leather and the aluminum metal frame really make the new X a premium phone.

If Verizon does release the Droid Turbo or Maxx, the decision will be whether I want the bigger battery or live with the smaller battery and get the congac leather back.
