Just got this phone, had a Samsung Fascinate. The only thing I haven't been able to figure
out is how to set the speed dials, ex. press 3 then phone icon for wife
4 son, 5 daughter etc.
Thanks

Welcome to Android Central! I don't have an X, but I'm pretty sure that kind of Speed Dial feature disappeared with Jellybean. It would probably be easier for you to place your frequent contacts as Direct Dial widgets on your homescreen, so all you need to do is tap the contact and it'll call.

this has nothing to do with moto x so dont blame the phone, but speed dials have been removed ever since JB was released which is why we have a "favorites" and "frequently called" list under the phone setting.

when you click on the phone icon, at the top youll have 3 icons; a phone, a clock, and a person/figure. so under frequently called, youll start seeing the people you call showing up. when you go into your contacts list, click on the contact(s) you want (do this one by one), at the top right youll see a star, click that and theyll show up when you go back to the "person" icon under phone.

thats our "speed dial"

but you can also use the voice command to call who you want which is pretty darn nifty and has been accurate for me so far.

Another option, if it exists on the new Moto phones, is the Direct Dial widget. Click the Apps button and then Widgets to see if it is there. You can set up as many direct dial numbers as you wish and stack them on top of each other on your home screen.

I didn't realize people still used speed dial. I thought that died off with flip phones lol I just call people through messaging as they are my most contacted people!

Is there a widget that can be set to dial a specific number? In my old HTC phone there was a built-in scrollable People widget that would allow you to set a specific number to be selected for each contact e.g. mobile, home, etc. On the Moto X there is a Direct Dial widget, but you have to set a 1x1 widget for each contact.

This is really sad. Nobody actually talks to each other anymore. It amazes me how quickly we have become a society that has adapted to communicating with our fingers. Before we had these types of devices communication with a finger usually only meant one thing.

how is not having a speed dial == not talking to each other anymore???

speed dial only made sense on phone which has physical keypad but with s/w keyboard its pointless
with favorites on dialpad speed dial is pretty much useless

I've done that but I'm wondering if there's any way for that direct dial widget to show the photo that is associated with the contact. The icon/widget is not super-readable, and a photo would be easier to pick from.

Mine use the contact photo. I don't know if it matters but all my contacts are synced from my Google account. I have also loaded my contact photos to local storage on the phone and re-applied them to the contacts from the gallery. Did this because they come in lower resolution when synced through Google contacts. Using a local copy assigned to the contact results in a much better contact image for me. Anyway, the contact images show on the direct dial widget icon for any that I put on my home screens.

Thanks. I don't believe I've synced my phone contacts with my google account yet. I wonder if that's the only way to do it - doesn't really make sense, but I'll give it a try if some sort of other easy solution doesn't work out. It seems odd that the photo doesn't show up on the dirct dial widget - what it shows is the blank/generic icon that is associated with each contact before you give it a photo to use.

That's the way I applied the photos to the contact - loaded into local storage, applied from the gallery.

[edit] - just checked, the contacts are sync'd with the google account.

Just so we're speaking the same language - the little speeddial icons on the home screen are normal size icons, gray in color with a faint humanoid figure, like the blank/generic ones in the contacts list. When I touch them, they enlarge (to about half the screen) and do show the photos at that point. What i'm looking for is something more distinctive for each icon on the screen - like the contact photo - so I can tell who they are at a glance. Maybe it takes a different launcher?

No, I meant using the call tab at the top of the message window. I mostly text my friends since I'm a small talker (I can sum up a whole week in a sentence or two).

Sounds like you are using the contact widget instead of the direct dial widget. The contact widget opens the contact as you describe while the direct dial widget simply dials the contact immediately upon tapping it. Either way, when I use a contact widget or direct dial widget they always use the contact image I have set for each individual contact. I don't understand why yours is not showing the image.

That is exactly my point that we do not verbally communicate with one another anymore. My response was supposed to be humorous...oh well I tried. Cheers

Yea, it's a contact widget - I'll change them to direct dial widget and report back!

[edit ... reporting back]. Just by random chance I got the photos on the screen. BTW, I'm just using "contact widgets" and will switch to "direct dial widgets" next. But I wanted to figure out the photo thing. So, I had two things going - I was putting contacts on the "speed dial" section of the contacts page (using the star in the upper right corner of the edit screen). I was also putting the contact on the home screen through the edit page.

Then, later, I was adding the photos. The photos would show up on the speed dial page, but not on the home screen icons.

By chance I added a photo before I added the contact to either the speed dial page or the home screen. The photo followed to both.

I did a little experimenting and found that unless you add the photo to the contact before you put it on the home screen, it will not follow to the home screen. If the photo is attached to to the contact either at the speed dial page or the contact list, and is then put on the home page from either, it will follow.

Strange.

Ah, I'll keep in mind that you're the humorous type when you post more around here :)

Just coming from the blackberry Z10 myself, this is very similar to what Blackberry did as well.
Thanks for the info, because I was also looking for speed dial options.

Does anyone know if you change the voicemail dailer part to add your password to it? I know not safe, but it's just one more password to remember.

I can set speed dial numbers by touching the menu button from the stock phone app. Dunno if that's what the op is looking for though.
