Moto X in South Africa

Anyone know if an AT&T phone can be used with a prepaid SIM in South Africa? Wondering if I'd be able to getting anything more than 2G?

As long as it is unlocked it will work on 3G, but LTE is not possible.

While visiting friends in Clifton Bay, I brought them an at&t branded Moto X and it worked fine on Vodacom 3G but no LTE.

AT&T won't unlock the phone... that really irritates me. So, I am forced to pay for an expensive global data plan. Anyone have experience roaming on an AT&T data plan? Wondering what I should expect for coverage and speed.
