If the Note 5 sells for the same contract price the 4 did at launch I'm looking at pretty close to $300. On contract subsidy. How is this a better value than the X which I can get for just a little more than that, paid in full? Because of S-pen and OIS camera? I don't think the Note 5 is worth it when you look at it that way.

It depends on your situation. If on Verizon, Comcast will give you a $200 visa prepaid card when upgrading, plus Verizon will give you a $200 minimum smartphone trade in. Both should stack. With those two stacking, the price of the Verizon Note 5 could actually be lower than the Moto X Style.

Of course buying outright is easiest, but if you really want the note 5 and are on a budget then it might be worth the effort

When I compare them, price isn't the factor. Its about the software.

I personally think the software of the Moto X is slightly better than that of the Note, but not by much.

The Note 5 at least has features that make use of it's screen size that are actually quite useful. Multi Window and the SPen apps are really nice and should really be implemented in stock Android.

That said, as a Note 4 user, I have grown tired of TW in only one area: those damn smiley faces for missing contacts.

A minor thing for sure, but one I can't take. I installed CM 12 on my Note 4 just to rid myself of them.

Re: Much better value than Note 5?

The S pen is always the deciding factor IMO, if you don't use it, then getting the Moto X is the best way to go. But if you use the s pen a lot, then nothing beats the Note 5.

Lol

So I have a bit of a dilemma. I have the opportunity to get a Note 5 at a very good price (about $550 for the 64GB version after a couple discounts) while the launch promotions are available through this week. At $800+ for the 64GB model, it wouldn't be worth it to me. But at $550, it's tempting. Especially when the X Style would probably be around $475 for me (with a leather back and 32GB). So for a $75 difference, I'm willing to take price out of the equation.

Based on everything else about the two phones, which would you pick?

The way I see it, the advantages of the Note 5 are:
- a screen that will probably be better (given DisplayMate's analysis)
- fingerprint sensor
- more flexible camera (RAW / Camera2 support)
- slightly thinner
- Better LTE bands for AT&T (supports all current and future brands with confirmed VoLTE and carrier aggregation)
- Samsung Pay (could be handy?)

Advantages of the Moto are:
- Carrier-free... no bloatware, no locked bootloader
- Stock Android (where it counts
- Moto display and voice
- Will almost certainly get Android M faster

So it seems to be superior hardware vs better software... which would you pick if price were not an issue? I like stock Android but the latest Touchwiz is definitely tolerable (especially with themes), so I go back and forth on this.

Re: Price aside, would you choose the X Style over the Note 5?

For me? Yep.

  • Screen - It won't matter that much from day to day .. it really won't. Unless I am really looking for it.
  • Fingerprint - I have use them before but definitely not a "must have".
  • Camera - For me I need auto -- I don't do RAW since I am not a camera expert. If auto works majority of the time on auto and produces good results I am good.
  • Thinner - Very moot point for my needs. Most phones are fine now a days .. if one is thinner it really doesn't mess with my day-to-day use.
  • LTE - Depends on your carrier. For T-Mobile I will be fine for my area.
  • Samsung Pay - I have used Apple Pay in the past when testing an iPhone 6+ for awhile.. it was okay but nothing that was a must have for replacing my credit card.

TouchWiz... Can you deal with it?

I'd probably still go with the Moto X, I still can't get over hearing about LG and Samsung phones that slow down after just a couple months. Even if they seem fast at first things sometimes big down. I'm not saying that can't happen with Moto phones, but it certainly seems there are more users who report having a zippy OG Moto X; can the same be said for the Galaxy S4?

thinness is actually a disadvantage IMO, I'd actually prefer slightly more bulk.

UX trumps all, and the bloat free, non branded and unlocked Pure running near stock, combined with the front speakers, subtle software enhancements, customizations via Moto Maker and not having glass makes it a very easy decision for me.

I'm also not a fan of TW, although I do realize it's been trimmed down a bit. but even if the Note was less expensive, I'd still opt for the Pure.

I'm also not interested in the pen, so that would obviously be a consideration.

either way you go, for less than $600, you're gonna be getting an amazing device. let us know what you choose!

Re: Price aside, would you choose the X Style over the Note 5?

Get the note 5, sell it on swappa.com, pocket some profit, then purchase the pure.

Re: Price aside, would you choose the X Style over the Note 5?

Here's the thing for me... And why I'm switching from a Note 4... When Moto X Pure/Style gets Android M, it won't completely destroy the phone. :-)

Re: Price aside, would you choose the X Style over the Note 5?

Yes, due to the SD slot, front stereo speakers, build (not a glass case crack magnet), no carrier bloat and no Samsung bloat.

Re: Price aside, would you choose the X Style over the Note 5?

For me three things come before price in this choice.

1. I prefer Moto UX to TouchWiz
2. I don't like to feed the Samsung/Apple duopoly
3. I want to support Motorola's effort to break free of carrier control.

So, yeah, X Style over Note regardless of price*.

*Within limits. I'd go for the Note if I could save a couple hundred bucks.

Same here. My note 2, 3, and 4 have all developed annoying bugs after major updates. I don't trust Samsung to implement android M. Time to give Motorola a try.

Edit: I lied, just bought a note 5. Mainly because it's out now and I have a new phone purchasing problem

Rethinking my plans now that another forum member alerted me that just recently, like within the last week, lenovo just completely axed the entire Motorola software team who made the X series what it is. To me this means the entire future of Moto X updates are going to be led by an entirely new batch of engineers completely unknown to me. I don't know if I'm ok with that, it seems like a risk proposition to me. Pretty much all of the OEM's have left a sour taste in my mouth taking so long to stabilize Kitkat and Lollipop, I don't want to risk another shake up on top of that.

Re: Much better value than Note 5?

I prefer the moto for the software and hardware. I've had two Samsung phones and two moto phones and the motos surpassed the samsungs by miles.
