Moto X2: 4.7" vs 5" screen

Personally I think they should stay at the 4.7" level. I've heard from a lot of people say that one of the reasons they like their Moto X's is because the screen size is perfect without being too big. In a field were everyone is going for bigger and bigger phones I think it could even help them stand out more if they offered a device of this size, hell in might even attract that iPhone 6 crowd since the screen sizes would be the same.

guys think about this for a min . I just bought a LG 8.3 tablet with lte on Verizon off contract for 300.00 bucks . its got a huge screen compared to a phone the over all device is at least 3 times the size of a smart phone its got a camera it has basically everything a phone has for 300.00 OUT THE DOOR NO CONTRACT. if lg can sell this device for 300.00 I promise you every single phone on the market is over priced by 300.00 at least. theres no way anybody can make me believe it costs more to make a phone that's 3 times smaller than a tablet.

Miniaturizing the tech that is in a tablet, adding cellular radios, and profit margins all drive up costs. I don`t know how we turned into a culture where we can`t pay the price of things especially since tech is a lot cheaper than it was even just a few years ago.

I think you hit the nail on the head whenever you said profit margins. the lg 8.3 already has lte . not to mention the fact that cellular radios and miniaturizing electronics is all mature technology at this point. the costs only go down the longer anything is being built. on top of that all this stuff is being built with what amounts to slave labor . why do you think these big companies all have profits in the billions every year ?

In My opinion, they will attract way more new customers with a larger screen than anything else. From reading these forums, the people that already love the X are not going to leave it for something else if it is a tad larger. New customers, like me, are not giving the X shot because we do not want to go to a smaller screen.

If Motorola would make a 5" phone with current LG G2 specs and all of the current Motorola ease of use features and the great Motorola reception, they could charge $500 for it and $150 subsidized and get it from current and a lot of new customers. They should be able to hit this price easily by sticking with the Snapdragon 800 and 2gb of ram. (LG G2 is currently $450 off contract most places)

I am so intrigued by the Motorola always listening features if they can get a 5" screen, I would try it from my LG G2. Check the size difference compared to the S4. Visual Phone Size Comparison

If You took the S4 and just trimmed the bezels down to current Moto X sixe you should be at about 5.25 x 2.70 x .35 or maybe a tad smaller.

How many of you would not jump all over a Moto X with a 5" screen the size of a Nexus 4? Take My Money Motorola..errr...Google!

For the people that like the Current Moto X size and features, just keep it the same and call it the Moto E. :)

Motorola has already done it at 5" with the DROID ULTRA/DROID MAXX: Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Google Nexus 4 - Visual phone size compare

Can we just point to Motorola and HTC? Look at HTC. Their phones are around the $600 mark and they struggle. I don't think Motorola is making a profit right now.

Theoretically: shouldn't a 5" 1080 screen cost more than an 8" 1080 screen since it's probably more expensive to pack more pixels in a smaller area?

And you're still only thinking about the hardware. What about the cost to develop the OS and the drivers and the software add-ons? What about the cost of marketing?

Very good point but that picture shows that they could squeeze down the size to keep the X a lot smaller and still have a 5" screen. The main point I read about is people wanting to keep the X as small as they can for the form factor. That Droid Maxx is basically G2 sized - Visual Phone Size Comparison

The gpad still has far fewer bands and a much less complicated radio to run it. Plus it has less lower quality mic and cameras, no ear piece, etc.

Beyond that, fitting x amount of electronics into x amount of space will always be significantly cheaper and easier than fitting x amount into x/4 space. Good lord the pcb for the motherboard alone would probably be 3 to 4 times as expensive. Then you have to miniaturize all the components and design the casing to fit it all that will fit in all and allow it to function properly. Then you have to somehow fit a much smaller battery and ensure that it can give you reasonable battery life with your software. All of this takes talented engineers and time. Then you have to design and purchase the equipment(with will have tighter tolerances and be more complex because of the smaller device).

But let's pretend that both cost the same for a minute. Even if the profit margins are huge, people PAY the price. No amount of profit or lack thereof will change that. The market has determined that a high end phone is worth 600$+, so that is the price they will be set at. Until people refuse to pay that price, nothing will change.

The number of people that vote with their wallets is the only number that matters. Phones could be sold at 90% profit or at 50% loss and it would make no different if the same number of people still paid the set price.

The Ultra/Max have capacitive buttons, making the phones TO BIG. However, I don't think it makes a huge difference at 4.7 vs 5", as long as the phone doesn't get bigger. If they can squeeze 5" or more on the SAME SIZE PHONE, then go for it.

So the Maxx is too big the Moto X is too small. What do you people want???

Not going to be physically possible to make the Moto X the same size as it is now and a 5" screen. Moto X has already done a great job of minimizing bezels.

A lot of wasted bezel space on the Maxx. I really think the size of the Nexus 4 but a little shorter would work based on current bezels on the Moto X.

Right!?

And if people want to go by BOM, they can go ahead and just buy the parts and put it together themselves.

Crude Photoshop..

The corners start to hit where there phone's curves are.

Great Work! That shows you that for the integrity of the screen it will not have to be that much larger than the current Moto X and keep everyone happy.

What I fear is the width going from 65.3 mm to maybe 67.0 mm or more to accommodate the screen. That bezel in my quick mock up looks unrealistic for 2014 when I eyeball it against the existing Moto X and the LG G2.

Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain this to me, but why is the bezel technically required? There are no electronics coming in from the sides and screens are often demonstrated not in a phone with the image being shown edge to edge.

Is it more the digitizer?

I wonder if there is a reason they can't engineer the lateral components of the digitizer 90 degrees to the front panel (down the sides of the screen)?

I know I don't want the phone to get significantly bigger, but I doubt you could notice the difference in hand if the phone was 2mm wider.

I also don't want my buttons on the back of the phone.

Nor do I, but I don't think there is a reason they can't be on the side even with an edge to edge screen. The side buttons would be behind the screen and digitizer. I don't think LG had to move the buttons off the side.

In fact, I would love a dedicated camera button.

There is no reason to have an edge to edge display, besides bragging rights. It means your hand will be on the phone so, there would have to be some palm rejection technology, then, the buttons may be moved to somewhere that may not be as natural as off to the side (see LG G2), and with an edge to edge to display cases will be limited, and it may shatter more easily upon dropping it, seeing as the screen is the edge.

The glass is already at the the edge! But I would advocate for 1-2mm bezels on the sides.

You probably don't want a true edge to edge phone, but 1 or 2 mm on each side would be enough to prevent accidental edge touches.

In terms of cases, they simply wouldn't wrap around the face much if at all, though they would artificially widen the phone and create a case bezel.
