Motorola Droid Turbo: Bugs, quirks, problems and more

This is a long rant, but this is my honest review of the Turbo and Verizon. I have already spoken to someone about these numerous issues, so don't flag me. CNET and Verizon wouldn't allow me to post my full review. I encourage those interested in this phone to reconsider another phone.

Some people may be sold on the super long battery life, the 21 MP camera, and the strong build of the Droid Turbo, but that's where the great specs end for me.
THIS IS YOUR WARNING: THEY WILL PUSH THIS DEVICE ON YOU AND GIVE YOU MANY OFFERS TO BUY IT.
I have a very critical review of the Turbo because of the terrible service I have received from Verizon Wireless in regards to the EDGE program, the warranty claim, and how they DID NOT require a signature for my device to be dropped off (to my house) from FEDEX, AND MY DEVICE WAS DELIVERED TO THE WRONG HOUSE AND WAS NEVER RETRIEVED. (the driver claims that he left it at the house on the corner, WHICH ISN'T MY HOUSE, AS STATED BY THE CORRECT ADDRESS WHICH I GAVE THEM). Verizon has yet to give me a functioning device nearly a week later. And they won't let me get another device of equal value, so be weary of EDGE and purchasing at a non-corporate store.
1. This device contains a lot of unnecessary (Verizon and Amazon) preloaded apps, which you CAN disable, but they still take up space. However, this device is bare bones, which is nice in the long run (Samsung's products lag so bad with time), but the Google ecosystem isn't efficient enough to offer good apps that work across all phones (in my honest opinion, I feel the PlayStore has so many apps and so many dated apps it is really hard to decipher which is worth downloading to IMPROVE the device. I feel that the apps should complement the device). Another little thing--why is there no dedicated flashlight widget INCLUDED? I think it passed time for that; it should be included in a device.
2. There is NO expandable memory.
3. The SIM card slot is placed on the volume rocker (the volume rocker pops out). Who came up with that stupid idea?! It is very flimsy. And within 3 hours of having the device, the Turbo would not recognize the SIM card. The retailers told me I had a faulty device, and it has been a great hassle trying to replace this phone with EDGE.
4. The camera takes detailed shots, but there is no optical image stabilization, so some pictures come out blurry. The front facing camera is in the center, which I like, but it is subpar. When comparing the Turbo to my Samsung GS3 front facing camera, the GS3 did not lag when I moved--the Turbo had a ghostly lag trying to keep up with my head movements. That is sad for a phone that is over 2 years newer. There is no dual camera!! This is 2014 entering into 2015, and there is no dual camera? The two flashes are nice, it gives better shadows when taking pictures, but there are no special camera features as featured on Samsung, LG, and Apple devices. I was very disappointed. And to my knowledge, there will be now added features from Motorola or Android.
4. There is no split screen feature!!! Again, my 2.5 year old device had a split screen feature, and several other phones have this necessary feature, like LG G3. How can I not read my email and do a quick search the same screen...come on this phone is half-baked.

5. The speakers are nice...it only has front facing speakers at the top. It doesn't get very loud, but at least it isn't muddled. I used some in-ear buds and the sound quality was nice and loud.
6. The keyboard is problematic. It is very small, and I have seen no way to adjust the pre-installed keyboard. The emojis are different (ugly) as well--they tried so hard to make it "unique." Swype is nice.
7. YOU CANNOT TALK ON THE PHONE AND SURF THE WEB!!! REALLY, Verizon, REALLY? It kicked me back to 1x and then said that this function isn't available...THIS IS 2014 ENTERING INTO 2015 AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM! I was able to surf the web and take calls with no problem on my Droid X back in 2011.
8. The battery does last a very long time, but come on, you can swap out a battery if you really needed it for a long period of time. Samsung and LG have considerably large batteries, and you can swap them out. There is NO power saving feature on the Turbo.
9. The display is very beautiful, and the colors are rich but not overly saturated. It sits well in the hand. But the home, multitasking, and the back keys are very annoying! They do not disappear, and they stay lit during videos. The black bar is annoying. It takes up space that could have been used for the display.
10. Why doesn't the phone come with headphones? This is an expensive device, and the Turbo charger is great, but no headphones?? That's different for a smartphone...most smartphones come with headphones--no questions.
11. The charger is quick, but you can't fold down the prongs, which I find problematic in the future. The prongs could chip or bend. The cord is also quite short--maybe 24-28 inches, and that does NOT go far.
12. The Moto features are nice, and Google Now is responsive.
One thing I can say is that I have the Samsung GS5 as a loaner and I prefer the Turbo a tad more--GS5 lags and the health features can be cumbersome, but I think I should have gotten the LG G3. It doesn't have the high end processor like the Turbo, but I doubt I would have noticed coming from such an "old" device (which I only replaced because of the lagginess and poor screen quality). Too bad Verizon EDGE has made this nearly impossible. But I will say that Motorola shouldn't have given me a defective device, so this goes towards their quality control. However, Verizon takes blame because I can swap out phones and they did not require a signature for such an expensive product that was stolen, of course, during the holiday season. I feel in the future, after my contract expires, I will NOT continue with VZW. Very bad customer service.

1) Bloatware - Nobody likes this but it comes with nearly every phone. Get the google play edition of a phone if you don’t want it.
2) You should've known there was no expandable memory going in. A little more research on your end would be beneficial to you when picking a phone. For most user 64GB will be enough.
3) I think the SIM card slot is a good idea being behind the rocker and haven't had a single problem with mine.
4) How many phones have a dual camera? While I can agree that the camera's aren't the best out there I have seem an improvement with the software upgrade which it sounds like you didn't do based on the fact that you also still complain about bot have data and voice at the same time which has been corrected with the software upgrade. Again though, cameras aren't the best.
5) Speakers are so so for me. HD voice sounds way better but it’s still so limited very few calls use this.
6) Download a new keyboard from the play store?
7) As mentioned above this is corrected but you must install the software update. Generally one of the 1st things a person checks for upon getting a new phone.
8) The battery lasts me a long time and the quick charger really makes it so I don’t need another battery. Again, you should have known this going in and not picked this phone if it was important to you.
9) Captive buttons - Same as above. Do your research and if you don’t like them why pick this phone?
10) Do you really need a 2 dollar set of headphones? I have a drawer full from past phones, you're welcome to a pair.
11) Would be nice of the prongs would fold down but is it something I'm going to complain about? NO.....They've made a faster charger for us and I am glad to see it. Why take away with a silly complaint like that.
12) Moto features are nice. Your problems with Verizon are just that. You may be better served to find another provider.

So to recap you may want to look at other providers that can make you happy. When you're talking to them about your new phone give them these requirements:

1) No Bloatware
2) Expandable Memory
3) Dual Camera
4) Split Screen
5) A Large Keyboard with emojis you approve as you aren't sure how to install a keyboard from the play store.
6) Talk and Surf at the same time. This should be fairly easy to find, even the turbo does do this now.
7) Removable Battery
8) On screen buttons
9) A quick charger with prongs that fold down.
10) Should come with headphones.

Taking all the above into account should get you the exact phone you would like. It's no fun to get a phone without features you want so I hope this will help you in the future to get the perfect phone so you don’t have another list like this one.

Have a great day and a nice holiday :-)

Hope everything works out for you.

Is there no way to get infinite scrolling for the screens or app drawer in the native launcher? Is that only possible in 3rd party launchers?

I apologize for cross-posting but this is really bothering me. My Turbo connects to my car via Bluetooth. Whenever I disconnect (turn off the car) the Moto voice app launches to the blue "listening" page. Is this supposed to happen? My MAXX never did this so I wonder if it is a bug. I already returned one Turbo and both did this.

I know that moto voice is supposed to be triggered when connected to a bt headset by just a button press (rather than speaking your catchphrase - in other words, you can press the button and say "read notifications" without having to say the catchphrase first).

So, just guessing but perhaps your phone is sensing a button press just as you disconnect. Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix that, but that's probably the cause.

I have the same problem. Plug phone onto charger that came with phone and it boots up. Turbo will not stay off when charging with the charger that came with the phone. I have a charger left over from my Droid Razr Maxx HD and it will charge the phone while off.

That's normal for the phone. In order for the turbo charger to work safely, the phone must be booted.

I don't think that is the case. Whenever I charge my turbo I power it off and plug in the charger and leave it for the night. My turbo does not boot up or come on at all while it is charging. I don't think that is normal. Now, on the other hand, if I use my Qi wireless charger it does boot up and I'm told that is normal behavior. I have never had mine come on just because I plugged in the charger that came with the phone.

I miss visual voice mail on Sprint which was free. I miss it, but I'm not paying extra for it. It's bad enough I have to $15 a month for access to Good Messaging (also free on Sprint). /rant

Basic visual voicemail is free. If you block premium vvm you won't be charged. Add the block feature through vzw.com

Anybody else having issues with Facebook app not loading news feed? Works great if I use chrome to pull up the website. It is mainly an issue on my home WiFi. I can stream video on that WiFi connection, but won't load fb app. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling app, resetting router, clearing partition cache, and doing factory reset

The Droid Turboa has terrible reception...Impossibe to use if traveling. Won't transition to new cell towers. Replaced the phone and sim card with same issue.

New bug today: Not getting any email or text notification tones. Nothing is working, have yet to try a restart. Shouldn't have to do that though.

Its not unusual that sometimes a person has to restart their smartphone, to fix hiccups. Not unique to Turbo. Just like a Windows PC has to be restarted on a regular basis, so does a smartphone.

Settings / sound / volumes. Is the notification volume turned all the way down?

So you got your new Droid Turbo and you have found a bug, quirk or problem with it. Go ahead and share and try to be as descriptive as possible w/screenshots to help others out in identifying and possibly coming up with a solution.

Other people are reporting that when an emoji is attached, the messages get messed up. A message saying hey with an emoji comes out on their phone as 'h e y (random symbol)'

Oh my god!!! Emoji isn't working right!!! Let's all file a class action law suit against Verizon, because their Emoji isn't working and coming out wrong!!

Jeez people!!!! Some of you sound like a bunch of beaches!! Like a new car that was launched..the Droid Turbo will have some issues...deal with it!! they will be fixed, this is VZW baby! People take care of their babies!!

Really? I've been tempted to make similar posts in reply to some of the questions and complaints by other forum members, but this is the one that pushed you over the edge? Decaf my friend.
