Moto's Bionic is Dead?

Um, really this announcement only says there will be a phone named the "Bionic" released by Moto.

As I posted in another thread - this article doesn't eliminate the possibility that the Targa is being ramped up to replace the Bionic at all. If you read it carefully - they said a Q3 release in the end of the 2nd paragraph. That still falls in line with the Targa replacing the Tegra Bionic.

The real devil will be in the details when they get closer to release and publish the "updated" specs. I can easily see Moto spinning this as "Oh, and we upgraded the processor to the OMAP4". The public will see it as one thing, but those of us who have been following this closely will know what that really means.

Ergo Sum: no real news here.
I am in total agreement with this post.

I would also like to add that abandoning the Bionic name simply would not happen. With that said. Still nothing new here. We are still in the same boat.

Lets see some specs.

I have to respectfully disagree.

The statement says that "many had speculated that the Droid Bionic was scrapped in favor of another model".

If they were not keeping the Bionic shell, i don't believe they would have made that particular statement as it was directly referring to the rumor that the droid was being scrapped for the Targa.

Just my two cents...

hmmm I read into it that they are saying that people speculated that the Bionic was put on ice in favor of a whole other model i.e. Targa coming out as the Motorola Gladiator (or whatever)

Regardless, we are now seeing from another source that the Bionic is being retooled and reworked. Again I just want some specs to leak now : )

Let's hope they upgrade it to an OMAP processor and launch it with 2.3 or 2.4 better yet get rid of blur and open up the bootloader. One can wish

My issue is that I want LTE and dual core, but if the Bionic gets pushed back I may not be able to use my New Every Two, which is done completely in June. Thinking about just getting the Thunderbolt for now and see what's going on over the summer. Decisions, decisions.

noooooooooooooooooooooooo : ) hold out and wait. Nah I understand you have to do what you have to do but the Bionic will be worth the wait.

Yea, I feel you. I'm trying to wait. I might just trade in the thunderbolt at the time the bionic comes out and use one of the other upgrades on my family plan for it since there won't be a New Every Two to use anymore.

ah, crap (this is good/bad news!) as I literally was about to order a TB, but really should upgrade before I go on my trip in 20 days for a dependable device.
Oh what to do now...? I really want the B, but my D1 just is slowly dying.

Well I also ordered a TB today.... just can't wait that long with my D1 becoming more un-reliable and blank screen (wallpaper but no icons or ability to use ANYTHING after exiting or going to the homescreen) for upwards of 15-60 seconds. That's a lifetime if something urgent/life saving happens.

Yes it does. The Bionic as we know it will be launched. There may be slight spec differences, but the design will be the same.

Here's what I expect to see changed:

-OMAP dual core instead of Tegra 2 (maybe Snapdragon?)
-1 gig DDR (doubt DDR2 will make the cut)
-Perhaps a different power management system

The biggest difference between the Etna/Bionic and the Targa was the fact the Etna used the NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU while the Targa used the TI OMAP4 CPU. Historically Moto has never used a Qualcomm CPU. Most of the other specs were very similar.

The path of least resistance when it comes to a CPU change is what I've been saying - a Targa/Bionic.

As CK has said, we need to wait and see. We all have our educated guesses on this and we all get to look forward to seeing who's right. In the mean time I'll be hunting some crows to serve and also just to hedge my bets find some good condiments that complement the same just in case. :-)

Based on their statement, the shell will not change. Hell, the processor might not even change.

If they were planning drastic changes, they would have said so.

At this point there isn't a phone with a dual core chip & WiMax (not released yet). The Evo3D to which I assume you're referring to is not out yet, so they could very well have the same issues with it. The TI OMAP dual core may also have issues. We just don't know for sure.

A possible explanation why the dual core and LTE don't play nice (if this ended up being all of the dual core chips) is the current build of Android isn't optimized for dual core. If that were the case, the one good thing to come out of it would be seeing 2.4 coming out sooner.

Until we see a dual core running LTE or WiMax, we won't know for sure if it's widespread or chip specific. Plus, if it's strictly an issue with LTE (meaning not with WiMax also), it makes me wonder if that's why HTC, Samsung, & LG went the single core route. We won't know for sure for awhile (until the Evo3D & Targa get closer to release).

I bet android OS is able to support multiple CPU's. Since android is based on Linux and in the android kernel is very similar to the Linux kernel, Google or a ROM dev will just have to set SMP=Y in the kernel .config file and recompile the kernel. Like what some Limux users customize their kernel to fit their computer hardware.
Like someone else said in another post is that we will have to wait for app devs to update their apps to enable multi threading.

I have been saving my NE2 since 1/11 (not as long as others) as I am with CK and others, that my next phone will be a dual core with LTE. My OG Droid was also acting up, so I broke down and added another line and got a Droid X for free to fill the void until I can get a dual core phone and also with a FFC.

OMFG hope this is true, and do anyone have a full WSJ account to read the whole article?

Delayed Bionic is better than no Bionic. But still Summer is a long time away.

A little tip for you about the Wall St. Journal, Barrons, or even the NY Times now. All you need is a headline. Type the headline into Google News, hit search and access the full story from the result. ;)

Glad to see you both you and CK being relatively self-effacing. I already poked CK in the ribs on the front page even though he probably didn't notice.

Regardless, the other question I asked earlier in this thread begs. If one changes the processor because of this rumored Tegra/LTE doesn't play nice issue...what of the XOOM?!?! Or like I also asked, is it possible the reason for it needing to be shipped back for upgrade to LTE is to replace the processor? In which case, this issue had to be known when they released the Xoom, no? And can one simply swap out a processor that quickly and easily as implied by advertising?

Okay, you and CK get your supposed little sources on this now. STAT! :D

Supposed little sources? You better watch it Sharon! .....I strangely love getting flack from you.

Lolololololol woot woot!!

Sent from my Droid
