I got a micro sd card adapter and with this was able to copy the contents of my sd card to my PC.

Have tried doing the scan that pops up when I put the card in. "Automatically fix file system errors" is checked but "scan for and attempt to fix recovery of bad sectors" is not. So I try the first one and get a message that it's read only so it won't do anything.

I want to try removing the write protection (Vista machine) and so I find these instructions and the middle instruction is the one I *think* I need:

How to Enable or Disable Write Protection on Removable Media (System Administration Guide: Devices and File Systems)

However, I don't know where to enter the info nor do I know what to input for device name. It also appears this will reformat the sd card and I was hoping to just remove the write protection and see if that fixes the problem.

If that isn't an option it's my understanding I must format as Fat32? Is there anything else I need to know? After reformatting I *should* just be able to copy my stuff back to the sc card, right?

Here ya go, link below... check out steps 3 and 4. Do this in your PC and then format FAT32. Since you have everything on your card saved to your PC you should be okay deleting all the data via format. After a successful format you can copy everything back. If the card is physicallly bad, you should get an error about not being able to format this disk. If not, it should succeed. Then, retry in your phone. If this doesn't work, then I would go ahead and try the Android permission solution you posted.

I think it's FIXED! When I originally put the card in my computer I set the lock on the adapter thinking it was for keeping that tiny little card from sliding out of the adapter and getting left behind in the computer slot. I didn't lock it this time and was able to do a scan & fix. Put it back in my Bolt and the ReadOnly message was gone from the notification screen! My phone seems to be working absolutely fine again without reformatting the card!

You go Girl! Haha... lame, I know... but it's what I thought of first. Glad you fixed it!
