The switch that switches from charge only to sharing data when connected to a PC or laptop via USB cable.

Please provide exact instructions assuming I have no specific knowledge of the phone or abbreviations in use, including the meaning of MTP.

When you plug your phone into a pc via the USB cord, to should get a notification in the pull down quick settings regarding USB. if you tap on that, you will get a few options like allow only charging etc.
MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol, it's a standard between devices that allows you to move files like pictures and videos.
In Nougat you don't get that drop down any more but you can go to settings... Developer options... Select usb configuration and choose it from there... This basically allows the computer to "see" your device as an external storage and allows moving of such files.
If you set it charging only around strange computers and unknown usb ports (airports..) it will block any attempt at snooping in your phone while charging the battery..
