I use one of 2 methods, either enable do not disturb from the notification shade or press the down volume button and mute from the pop up.

I like DND better because I set it up to let important numbers to ring through.

If I really need it silent, I mute through the volume menu.

Absolutely, I use it all the time. This is quickest and best. I do it unconsciously at this point and forgot all about it.

I'll mute from the volume menu first but as you've said, DND is also a really good option.

You are right! It's very convenient to have it in the drop-down menu.

So, the more I think about this, the more Im trying to understand the OP's definition of "Mute". Do they want everything completely silenced, or do they want notifications and calls to vibrate?

If we are telling the OP that DND is the best and quickest way, and if they have exceptions set, those contacts will get through.

Now, if those contacts get through, does the phone actually ring, or is it a vibrate(or both depending on how sounds are set)?

If the OP considers Mute to be just silenced, but vibration notification is ok, then I think Power+Volup is the best solution. If they want it completely silenced, no matter who is calling, then volume up and tap the bell icon till its struck through.

The way my DND works, my "favourite" contacts will vibrate and ring when they call or text me. You are right about silencing - then no sounds or vibrations will come through.

Exactly, I have DND set for 12-8am but starred contacts can get through. My wonder is that if the OP sets theirs to DND, their favorites come through negating the need for muting the phone. Only way to completely mute phone is vol and hit the bell icon until silent.
