My Bionic

Give it a shot

Call you on your phone? Can I just add you to my chat and then call you? Is that how it works? lol I never really needed to use it before. But I have called other computers on my other gmail account.

Yes. I should show up in your gtalk menu with a green video camera icon showing I'm available

What a great thread - thanks much BWorley

The Bionic seems great and excited about 4G but not being a current Verizon customer with an unlimited plan that will get grandfathered (at least as of today), what concerns me most is something that hasn't been discussed yet on this thread. How quickly have you been eating up data on 4G? Streaming Netflix aside, even for basic browsing, email, updating maps/GPS in car (vs downloading Navigon maps, etc) etc, the speed of 4G ,which is awesome and lets you do so much more, comes at a major literal cost as we all know which makes these tiered plans a bit scary.

So anything you could do to post some of your specific real-world data usage with numbers (per your latest post, if you could, maybe video chat data usage as well) would be much appreciated and a big help to those of us unlucky ones who don't have unlimited abilities.

Speed is a good problem to have but not if I hit 10-20GB in a month pretty easily.

Thanks

Here's a picture of what it looked like on my screen during the video chat over wifi. 4G looked almost identical to this, maybe even better. The sound quality seemed better over 4G, but I can't say for sure, it might've just been something weird that I didn't know of.
Oh, and it'll look better than this on a phone screen too, my laptop's screen resolution and size is MUCH larger than a 4.3 inch screen with a qHD display lol. And for some reason my room is very dark, even with the light on.

I use wifi whenever possible so I don't know how accurate a picture of usage you'll get. I have unlimited but I'm the kind of guy that will search for wifi at a restaurant and if it's password protected I ask the waitress what it is. It's a way of life. Probably won't need to do that much anymore.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I hear you on looking for wifi but I guess I'm being a little geeky about worrying about the security of that and more to your point "Probably won't do that much anymore" is the key here as you have unlimited. Because you have unlimited, any tests you get a chance to do on how much data was used would be appreciated. Maybe on this forum, I'm one of the very few with this issue of not having unlimited on Verizon (currently AT&T) as most everyone already would have likely had unlimited :) Not having unlimited sure sucks though as it would require a lot more data watching especially at the super fast speeds so any info would be appreciated

thanks again

Same here, I'm stuck with 2GB a month when I get the phone since I'm still using a basic phone.

Think you're way more worried than you need to be. I use my blackberry now for pretty much just the basic things i bolded above, and even on a "high use" month for myself I've never used more than like 400 MB of data, and often average around 200 MB or so. Just cuz its 4G doesn't mean you're automatically going to be using more. Its all at your discretion. I mean my average data usage could literally go up 8-10x when I get the bionic and I wouldn't reach 2 gigs. Of course, I will have unlimited data grandfathered in so if I find stuff to do that involves tons of streaming I'm sure I'll be happy... but at the same time I'm on a wifi network so much that my blackberry doesn't use, I'm honestly might never need the unlimited. Who knows.

Your best bet is to see how much data you're using in a month once you get the phone and then adjust your data usage accordingly.

Yeah. I mean everyone ought to have wifi at home right? Save your major downloads of new apps and updates and stuff like that to when you're on there. You're basic email and web browsing and stuff like that really does not use much data. Believe it or not, when Verizon switched to tiered and brought up the fact that the vast majority of users don't use more than 2 gigs of data a month anyway, it wasn't a lie!

There's some easy to find graphs I think on CNET or somewhere (I'm not doing all the work for you, go searching), that show how much streaming vid or music you would need to use in a month to reach 2 gigs. Its really a lot. Yeah if you're using netflix you're going to crawl up there pretty quickly, so try not to do that, or like KillerG says just experiment a bit your first month and see how much data you use. The MyVerizon app on your phone will do a very good job every day letting you know how much data you've used in the current month, and there's other apps that will do it even more accurately I think if you're worried.

Bottom line, don't stress, its hard to use that much data!

All my friends that use their phones heavily often don't go over 2GB anyways

Good points guys - I was asking about the basics for curiosity but to be more clear on actual usage, I will be out of WiFi range a ton (sales on road) and love the idea of 4G as it's just more like wifi. It makes videoconferencing with colleagues and clients etc. actually possible which would provide a big value. Would be on email a lot with larger docs, showing clients the web site, how they login, other things online, etc

Tons of knowledge here so is there a way to get this done without going broke with the Bionic? I just really like the huge potential benefit for business usage. As a side note, definitely not trying to change the main topic at all as this is about the Bionic and I feel the data discussion as far as LTE relates.

Thanks

After seeing how fast this is, you may want to consider scrapping your home wifi, get a VZ mifi for home and see if that saves you any money. See if you can share GB between Bionic and the mifi.

agreed - had pondered that before but was never possible until 4G - to your point, might indeed be a good solution to account for all the variables - thanks

I would like to correct those people that say the memory on this is 24, its not 24gb its 32gb. This is what i got from the Motorola Droid bionic facebook.
