My Boyfriend is Getting Texts from Me That I Am Not Sending

When texting with a certain person, he receives texts from me which I am not typing. They appear, but then do not stay in the thread. He is in San Diego and uses a Google Nexus 5X with Google Project Fi service, and I am in San Antonio, using a Samsung Galaxy J3 with Virgin Mobile service. It seems to only happen when his screen is closed. He sees the message come in, but when he opens to the thread, it isn't there. Could they be previous messages that are coming off our thread as we run out of space?

What app are each of you using for texting? Is he sure these are texts and not some other notification? I'm sure it's hard without the two of you not being able to see what's going on with each other's phone in person, but I think we need a little more detail to understand what may be causing this. Maybe he can take a screenshot when the notification comes up before he opens the app.

Thank you for your response! Yes, I'm sure that he is sure they are texts, as they are messages such as "I am going to bed now, good night" and "you are full of ----" and "you should make plans with her." Definitely not some other type of notification.

I was using "Messages," the default text message app on my phone. He has been using Google Hangouts.
