My choice what to do. Huawei Mate 20 Lite or the Galaxy Note 4

Hi all.
Please help me decide between a Huawei Mate 20 Lite and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Both brand new in box.

The Huawei, released in 2018 has most of the better specs. Except for it's display, which is IPS LCD at a resolution of 2340x1080 /409 ppi.

The Note has a Super AMOLED Display at 1440 x 2560 / 515 ppi.
A type of display which I really like for it's sharpness and vibrant colours.
Another plus for the Note is the removable battery and the Optical Image Stabilization on it's back camera.

I don't know if the release date of 2014 will be problematic in the current or near future (regarding software support,etc) or even processing power.

Apart from navigation and making phone calls, I will mostly use it for social/multimedia things. Some web browsing, youtube, etc..
So it has to be fast enough to perform those tasks for at least a year and a half.

Welcome to Android Central! I'd go with the Huawei. It's not a good idea to get a 2014 phone in 2019, and it's doubtful that Note 4 is truly "brand new." Chances are that it's at least refurbished.

The only advantage the Note has is a higher resolution screen, and many people cannot see much if any difference between 400 and 500 ppi.

Otherwise the Note has inferior specs and 3 year old software that hasn't recieved a security update in 2 years. Very unlikely the phone is actually new and never used, and if it has truly sat for nearly 5 years I'd suspect the battery to be in poor condition.

I've still got my old Note 4, sure the screen is beautiful, but the experience is inferior to modern phones.

I once owned a Note 4 and towards the end of 2018 had a Mate 20 Lite for review, and these devices are simply not comparable.

The Note 4 was a powerhouse in its time, I got it day before launch day and had it for 22months, used it heavily daily, it was an absolute beast of a thing, I still have it in my drawer, and using it now it simply is not built to handle more modern apps that well, it tends to heat up a lot and slow down.

You have to keep in mind that the Note 4 came with either a Snapdragon 805 SoC that was built on the VERY old 28nm process, or the Exynos 5433 built on the 20nm process, in 2014 this was powerful, however there was a huge leap in these processes between 2014 and 2015,and by early 2015 the industry moved to the far more efficient 14nm process, meaning the SoC ran much faster while being a lot more power efficient and producing far less heat, leading to less throttling of performance.

The Note 4 is simply not built to run the more power intense apps we have today, it will heat up a lot and throttle much sooner, yes it has a lot features, it was ambitiously built device but the combination of QHD display and 20nm SoC means it hits its peak pretty fast.

The Mate 20 Lite uses a Kirin710 SoC built on a 12nm process, making it a far more efficient device made to handle a lot more intensity without breaking a sweat. Mate 20 Lite also features a huge 3750mAh battery, so despite being more efficient it's also got more than enough juice. I would easily get 7-8hours SOT out of it daily with over 24hours off charge, it is absolute Road Warrior sort of device, it will get you very far and charge pretty quickly to.

My advice is to completely avoid any device that is using a SoC that is larger than 12nm in this day and age. A Galaxy Note 4 is nice,but it will not be happy running YouTube, Navigation, Instagram and Web Browsing for prolong periods.
