My Droid X randomly "restarts" itself

It sucks that Moto knows this a big problem, yet it doesn't get the attention that is needed. It's very annoying when I am trying to do something on my phone and then my phone is like NOPE i'm shutting down on yo ass. booyahh!

Please read my "Note" below my sig. This reset problem all too often results from the automatic updating feature for Market's downloaded apps.

One thing I forgot to mention is that you need to review your My Apps list periodically because new downloads will need to be "un"checked and/or sometimes an update will restore the auto-update feature. PITA, but what a difference it makes!!

This makes perfect sense. Thank you.

I had that problem and it was getting worse each week. I have heard of people getting three or four replacements with the same issue. Long story short since I have played around with roms and themes I haven't had the issue. If you are wanting to stick with stock back up and do a full factory restore with abc and wipe data and cache.

How exactly would I do a back up with my Macbook?
I have paid apps and want to make sure I would get those back after a factory reset. Thanks!

I figure I might as well chime in on this.

The only time I'm getting reboots is once or twice a day after I slide to unlock. It never does a reboot otherwise. I'm running rooted (via z4root) 2.2.1 with ADWLauncher EX. A factory reset didn't change anything. Even running stock, unrooted I was getting a reboot when I slide to unlock once or twice a day. it doesn't seem like it's a full reboot either. It takes maybe 30-40 seconds to get back to a usable state, as opposed to the full minute or two when I do a manual reboot.

I'm on the fence about running a custom ROM. I'm currently watching youtube tutorials and reading up on what is available. Ideally this is just a waiting game until I can get my Nexus S 4G through work and then I'll just have people call my Google Voice number.

I've noticed a similar behavior on mine ever since I installed Liberty 1.5, beforehand it never happened. I use Launcherpro, not ADW. Mine will freeze when I hit the power button to turn the screen back on, and I can very faintly see the lock screen showing but incredibly dim, yet I can't interact with it. Then the phone will reboot after being locked up for 30 seconds or so.

I'll slide to unlock and the slider will get stuck in the unlocked position and the next thing I know I'm looking at the red eye. Really really weird.

I got rid of launcher pro and did a factory reset and added everything back and haven't had any spontaneous reboots since. Not saying it's launcher pro but I didn't come up with it being a potential issue on my own. Between the reset and removal of launcher pro my problem seems to be fixed.

I'm having exactly the same issue here, phone reboots when plug in the USB cable. Used to be only when connected to computer now it happens when connects to wall charger. And it's getting worse and worse: this morning the phone shut itself down (no boot up) when connected to the charger. And I didn't realize it until some one told me that my phone didn't pick up calls...
