My Evo Camera/Video just got Schooled by Iphone4

I like this from Steve Jobs , great customer service.

Thursday, Apple found itself responding to complaints that holding the phone by its metal edge causes mobile reception to suffer.

The company's response, in a nutshell? You're holding it wrong.

"Just avoid holding it in that way," Apple CEO Steve Jobs wrote in an e-mail that was making the rounds on the Web on Friday morning

Quick comparison
Checking the exif data. The EVO in poor light always seemed to choose ISO100, while the iphone chose an ISO1000. I had to manually set the evo to iso800 to get a fair comparison.

It is just a phone guys, it is not a camera or camcorder. They are nice added features but it's not what makes the phone.

Thats funny my Evo vids don't look any where as crappy as that. Its prob some Iphone fanboy trying to prove there ipod I mean iphone is better. After getting the correct settings my vids are excellent. I don't care about Retina Displays, I care about my calls not dropping. Who puts the antenna on the outside of the phone???

I'd like to see a comparison in a well lit outdoor setting, not some darkened room where the environment can be easily manipulated to favor one device over the other. Plus one device may be optimized for lower light conditions, this does not mean one can't be better than the other under different lighting.

I agree. The guy "says' both phones are on default settings but who really knows. Obviously an iPhone proponent shooting the video. I'm also a photographer and if videography is anything like photography...it would be super easy to post process that iPhone video before uploading it to youtube. Just because he SAYS they're both on "default" settings, doesn't mean he didn't process it in a video enhancement program before uploading it. With the looks of his "setup" in the room he's shooting in, I'm sure he's well versed on video editing. Like I said...just because he SAYS they're on "default" doesn't mean they really are. :)

HTC did, in fact they even patented it in 2009 :)

United States Patent Application: 0100141535

Thankfully, they realized it doesn't work.

Maybe it is just me but the video really does not look that good at all on an iPhone.

It is okay, no worse than most phone video, but not the "best video on any phone" that has been touted.

Every Iphone 4 video that I have seen so far is kind of bland or dull if you will, just very colorless. Please point me to some iPhone video that has some good color to it. The indoor footage so far is consistent with a video phone, sometimes too bright or dark, white balance auto adjusts in the middle of any camera movements as does focus. Maybe it is supposed to be that way.

I am being very open minded here... I just don’t think the iPhone is superior, sorry I just don’t. Maybe it is just me.

The Evo footage has much more color to it. It also has those lame compression artifacts at times with fast movement though. I am hoping they can fix that via software or a 3rd party app.

Neither will replace a good SLR or Hi-Def camcorder but the Evo, while not perfect in anyway, is simply not that bad...

Even if both phones are at the default setting, it's not that hard to change the settings. The EVO has an easily accessible setting to make the recording brighter or darker, and other settings for contrast and saturation. I suspect it wouldn't be hard to make the EVO video look pretty similar to the iPhone one.

Here is my question for you guys. I am most likely going to switch to an Evo from my palm pre. Video recording is actually pretty important to me. I think the current 24 fps on the evo is the problem. I'm not exactly a tech guy, but that's my opinion. My question is...do you think htc will improve the phone's video recording capability via froyo or gingerbread?? Do you think they'll increase the fps from 24 to 30 or so??? I WANT THIS PHONE. I would be quicker to make the switch if I knew they could upgrade the camera :( Please fill me in here.

The problem isn't 24 fps. Movies are 24 fps, and no one complains about that.

The real problems, I think, are two: When recording HD video HTC compresses the heck out of it, I guess to save both storage space and to reduce the data throughput requirements. It also doesn't seem to expose very accurate. Using the brightness slider to tone down the image (or lighten it up) when needed should make a big difference in that aspect.

Data compression is the biggest issue, though. Since that's all software, it should be fixable.

Surely someone must know how to code some sort of app for the Evo that compresses the video in a different way.

I don't care how much space an HD video takes up...we have SD cards, I can just transfer these files to a computer or external harddrive. I don't know why HTC doesn't just change the compression rate for video recording.

But one of the reasons you guys bought the evo was because the "specs" which comprehensivley make up the totality of user experience. I am really impressed with the apple then again APPLE is made in the USA and HTC is a taiwanese product-- and very young company. I agree though, going to AT&T on this device just kills it for me. Why can't the EPIC record in 720 P! If it did, I think that would be the way to go! haha.

hey why don't you shove your iphone4 up your ass and then try making a call or see if you get a signal?

Listen,

I have an EVO and have contiplated on getting an Iphone only cause of looks at first. Then, my friend and I both took video and pictures with our phone (indoors) and i have to admit that BOTH pictures and Video came out BETTER on the IPHONE4. Now, i'm not a photographer/videogrpaher but the COLORS came out BRIGHTER and more Vibrant. Now, i also have an issue with the Grainy pics. I dont know if its a non-setady hand, lighting or what, but out-the-box, the the EVO is has a crapy camera for it to be 8 MEGAPIXELS.

Consumers want things to work as perfect as possible as the default. I dont want to have to change my ISO, lighting, or other settings for every picture unless i'm in a highly tense setting.

I think the over-all colors on the EVO kinda suck vs. the Iphone4 and even the Nexus One. Reds arent Red enough, just looks a little washed.
