So I have a strange one here. My GF gets chinese texts from me very randomly. So random that I can't trace when it happens. There haven't been any for months and then boom there is one random Chinese text that appears in our thread. It doesn't appear on my phone, only hers. I thought maybe she had a virus but she has an iphone, so then this would seem to point to my phone. I do have some third party apps installed but nothing crazy and they always have millions of downloads on the google store.

Also she is the only person that this happens with and seemingly I am the only person that she has this issue with.

Any thoughts on how to tell who's phone would be the problem and how to fix this??

Thanks!

I googled around and it looks like you're not alone.
phone receiving & sending weird texts? - Rogers Community

The best guess is that you're sending her an emoticon that the iPhone doesn't recognize and assumes you're sending in chinese.

Thanks for the quick reply! In fact we are both on rogers and she has an i-phone 5s just like in the thread so this would seem to be on the right track. However I send her random emojis all the time and this time there was only a single emoji in the text, and it was something I send her all the time without issue. Seems like we will have to continue the investigation! I will call rogers today:)

It is the emojis from what I can gather as well. Have an old S3 that has gotten the same sort of chinese/japanese when emojis have been sent to me by both a S5 & iphone SE. Not sure why it became an issue within the past 2 weeks though.

I have a friend who sent me emojois from his iPhone and on mine i received a square box with an x in the middle for each emoji it couldnt decode.
wonder why yours didnt show up like that.

Emojis are just text characters. If the phone gets one it doesn't recognize, you get the box with the X. But if it gets one that iit "recognizes" as a Chinese word, it goes into "Chinese mode", and the whole text is "decoded" as Chinese. I read somewhere (but not from an authoritative source, so take it for what it may or may not be worth) that the problem is on Apple's end. (Since iMessage if proprietary, who can tell?)

Very interesting. But if what you're saying is true I should be able to force the phone into chinese mode by sending it the same emoji that I sent it last time it decoded in chinese? This should be pretty easily testable. .

Also are you saying that there's some kind of hidden way to send chinese text through english text characters? For instance say :P is behind the emoji that sticks it's tongue out. Does this also translate into a chinese character? Or something along those lines?

Maybe your girl is secretly interested in Asian guys, and you can just roll with it and Rev her engine?

A lot of people are having the Chinese character issue since updating to Marshmallow. No known resolution.
