happened to me 2 or 3 week ago, on a Nook Color, the cable which was the original, broke and the pins were all messed and some were bridged, but still charged the tablet, i think that the way they were bridged caused some sort of short or misdirected the current and fried the card, depending on the type of damage, the data could still be retrievable, unluckily mine was totally burned, also, it could have been damage for over-voltage, my laptop has an unusual voltage output, which started damaging the card and the cable finished the job, dunno, the card was a total loss, i bought a new one
