I don't get the Oreo love-fest over notifications. I find them absolutely maddening on my new S9, which I generally love otherwise. I've lost so much notification control, I'd like to scream and jump up and down.
I run an Etsy shop, so there are notifications that are really important to me -- such as Gmail, Etsy's own app sounds, PayPal -- that sort of thing. My gmail account connected to all of these things also gets a gross amount of promotional emails from various places. Many of these are useful WHEN I HAVE time to look (supplier sales, etc).
On my still-nougat-running S7, I had Gmail set to play a sound and notify visually of emails in 2 labels -- primary and updates. These two covered all the important stuff and left out all the sales junk that my suppliers send. Everything else was set to notify with no sound. Oreo does not permit this. It's frustrating beyond belief that I must either permit my phone to chime incessantly, or not at all. I've opted for not at all. It also means I must OCD-ishly check my phone for new important emails.
Luckily for me, the Etsy app actually works properly and notifies me of new transactions - it is now my only way of knowing (audibly) that I have a new transaction. PayPal silently notifies me of incoming payments and when I pay someone else (and is no longer the default payment method for Etsy anyways).
For other apps that had their own sounds on my S7, I have found that those are now by default, annoyingly set to chime with my default notification sound on the S9/Oreo, which if I set that default to silent, it SHUTS UP ALL OTHER notifications as well! WTF? I used to have my default notification sound be silent, because I hate listening to my phone chime all the time for dumb things. Fill my status bar with notifications, fine. But, don't make a bloody noise every time some app demands attention for something stupid.
So basically, I have found myself slowly going through all of my installed apps and setting notification options for each app. Something that I NEVER had to do before! How is this so awesome? I want sound for a handful of these and then pure, lovely silence for everything else, and yet it seems like all I can manage is silence or... yeah. What a nightmare.
Has anyone else with a new S9 found these kinds of things annoying or is it really just me? I love this phone otherwise.
