My phone feels not as snappy as when I initially set it up. Why?

I'm pretty well versed with my phone and the settings in it. I have an Samsung A6 SM-A600A. It's unlocked from my carrier. I'm here in the US.

I'm using 78% of my internal storage. That's 25.12 GB / 32.00 GB.

I am running the Super NOVA Prime launcher instead of the stock one.

I'm a little on the minimalistic side, so I've turned off ALL the animations, etc. I like phones to be snappy and fast when opening applications, etc.

Even though I've done all that, it seems the Android OS lags or stutters when opening some applications, or other native tasks for the first time. It could be, the browser, Android Auto, text message, or really any app.

It's really been frustrating since I got this phone new (I can't return it now) and I set it up as a new phone.

The phone of course works very well when it's fresh and has virtually no apps on it. These problems only happen after I get all my downloaded apps set up.

1. I'm wondering if some of my problems are from I am using most of my internal storage space?

2. Is the processor just so inferior that this is just how these phones perform?

OK, I reset the phone completely and set it up as a "New Device". I've only had time to put back a few apps. I'm at 41% storage out of 32 GB. So, 13.13 GB / 32 GB. I imagine once I put back the essential apps I need I'm going to be back up to the 60%-70% range possibly.

I'm not running any automation or heavy background task apps either.

The phone is running pretty smoothly so far. I've reduced all the animations back down to .5 instead of 0.

I don't really have a whole lot of info to go off of at the moment. Is it still plausible to say that the phone's capacity in the storage is just too small for my type of usage?

Hey everyone! Here's an update:

I restored my phone a few days ago. It's a hell of a lot faster (not using Dev options) and it's exactly what I was looking for. The phone literally is extremely responsive and it doesn't hang one bit. Switching screens, opening/closing apps. Everything just very fluid and quick/snappy. It reminds me of how fast I saw some of the newer phones (Android) on some Youtube channels during a review.

However, I've been extremely careful with downloading excessive apps to avoid slowing down my phone or causing it to lag. Well, that's exactly what has happened already!

I have 50% space left on my phone, so I don't think it's related to this.

I don't have the time to isolate it down to a single app, because that would require me to download 1 app at a time and see when I notice the phone has slowed down. Honestly, I was monitoring my phone usage very carefully when I installed each app already. I don't know when the phone started to have speed issues.

I guess my question to you all is, I'm considering just buying the new Pixel 4 or OnePlus 7T. Would the added ram, and better processor help prevent my phone from having these lagg issues?

Would anyone care to know what apps I installed on my phone? I have it narrowed down to literally the basics of what I feel is necessary to have on my phone.

It's hard to say which app without doing it one by one , as it could be one that you think isn't a problem. 1+7t is fastest and smoothest android phone I ever had and I have many different android but a bad app can cause it to feel laggy/issues also

Is it possible that I have too many background activities present?

Most of my apps do not run in the background. So, how is it possible I could have one bad app that slows the entire phone down?

Are we sure I'm not just maxing my ram out and that's the problem?

All it takes is 1 bad app to causes UI to freeze or crash , when you put it in safe mode you didn't experience issue because it turns off all 3rd party apps and only native apps are working .

Android has a good memory manager, so unless one app is trying to use so much RAM that it's causing Android (the virtual machine) to starve - and with 8GB of RAM that's not possible with an Android app - it's not "maxing your RAM out". (Android only needs about 1GB maximum, and most apps don't use more than 1GB - so that leaves you with somewhere around 6GB for the memory manager to play with.)

How can an app crash or freeze the UI if it's not running? I try to keep most of my apps disabled from running in the background.

I refreshed my phone again last night to do some trial and error. I made a mistake when I said Developer Options were off. It looks like all the animations, etc. were all set to x.5 and that's where I was getting the "snappy" feeling from.

In anyway, I installed about 10 apps and it became clear to me that it's possible that maybe the UI isn't going to be 100% fluid like I had originally though. I noticed that some of the UI's weren't perfect 100% of the time. I also realize this could be from the Developer Options being on. I'm starting to feel like this is just the software and what I'm noticing in terms of sluggishness might in fact just be normal for the OS. I think I might just be so used to the phone being snappy that any minor stutter I notice I assume it's the phone acting up. All my apps are opening normally and seem pretty quick on their own. Now, there was a time when a few of the apps (like the Dunkin' app) would take a little longer than normal, but it's not doing that now.

I'm going to keep an eye on the phone.

When it comes to me considering buying the Pixel 4 or the OnePlus 7T. I would buy the 7T, but the camera array on the back in my opinion is really ugly to me. I suppose I could opt for the OnePlus 7 Pro then. Do you or anyone else here have experience with the Pixel?

Yes , I do own pixel phone and 1+7 pro didn't like the "T" variant

Your welcome!
Can definitely search around for deals .

The OnePlus website seems to be offering the biggest discounts at the moment.

Have you had any experience with the OnePlus 7? It's a little less expensive then the 7t Pro and I kind of like the idea how the camera is built into the screen instead of it popping out.

The OP 7 is running great and I'm quite happy with mine. The phone flies, battery life is excellent and you can shoot pretty good pictures. I preferred the normal version over the Pro, as well. The popup camera, bigger size and extra money were my main reasons to not get the Pro model.

If I had to buy a phone now I'd go for the 7T, though. I don't mind so much how the back camera looks and you get the 90 Hz display and other improvements over the 7, including a better camera.

Just a quick note since you mentioned Nova and changing animations in the Developer Options. Android 10 still needs some improvements, specially on how it handles full gestures and custom launchers. It doesn't matter the device, really, animations coming back to the home screen from an open app are not as smooth as they were until Pie.

To give you an idea of the size of this problem. Google only enabled full navigation gestures while using a custom launcher on the Pixel 4 and Samsung disabled this option on all their Betas.

Yes, that's correct. I try to (at least recently) on my Samsung A6 keep everything stock with the exception of turning the animations down to x.5. If I turned the animations off completely some apps (Waze) would get a little buggy when using. Also with animations off I noticed the phone would be a littler choppier with navigation through apps, scrolling, etc. sometimes. I stopped using custom launchers all together and all that to sees if it would help improve the phone's speed. So far, it's been a good experience, but I'm outgrowing my phone. I want a better/faster user experience. I'm not a very feature driven person. I used to love the Samsung S9 with all the cool bells and whistles, but I've gotten over all of that.

Since my A6 has been frustrating me lately with how it's been performing. I generally always turn off most features of the phone such as, Bixby, Gestures, Face Unlock, most notifications. I only leave on WiFi, BT, and NFC when necessary. I try to keep the phone as stock as possible while staying optimized. I also turn off most app notifications and prevent as many apps from running in the background that I don't need 24/7.

I'm starting to lean more towards the 7 or 7T, maybe a little more towards the 7T direction. I forgot about the form factor. I do like medium sized phones such as the A6. I couldn't see myself owning one of the biggest screen models. I want a phone that's going to last me years without having to shell out $600+. Why didn't you go with the 7T initially?
