My Rant on the iPhone 5s

I think Apple won't have NFC, simply because they're Apple. Many better things exist, but Apple wants to make their own. Lighting cable? I laugh at it compared to micro USB and the new USB 3.0 port on the Note 3. How much did it cost you to buy all new adapters? $40? $80? More money for them.

Better is a very subjective term. The main advantage of micro-USB is that it is commonly used. But otherwise, it charges more slowly, and there is no guarantee as to how long the industry will stick with it.

Apple does like to spin off existing technologies, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they are objectively worse.

That isn't necessarily true as well. The Galaxy s4 charges really fast on micro USB with 2 amps. It all depends on the device. Maybe I worded that wrong, sometimes the technology isn't better. Most of the time it is though.

And the s4's charging cable isn't standard either, from what I have heard.

Plus, it seems the lighting cable has internal circuitry, including a processor and ram. I have no idea what apple intends to use them for, but it should be interesting.

Ehh pretty close. It is micro USB so it's compatible with others either way. My question is, why would a cable need a processor? That seems like wrong information, but I'll take your word for it.

Wow, that's something I had no clue about. Why though? There's other much simpler options than a full SoC.

Your guess is honestly as good as mine.

One theory is that it is a way to control the supply of 3rd party cables.

Uniquely Apple though. It will be one of those things we look at back many years from now and conclude to be either sheer genius, or pure lunacy.

That said, here's one apple user who intends to upgrade from my 4s to the 5s. :)

It's certainly unique, I'm just wondering if it will have any practical use down the line. Right now I think it's crazy to put something like that in a cord (and seeing I have a spare lighting cord I might pull it apart to confirm this), but it is really cool. And good luck with the purchase! I wouldn't do it being a hardcore android fan, but either way enjoy the 5s!

Everyone that is foaming at the mouth hating the 5S needs to get a life. There has to be more important things in life to be that passionate about. Seriously.

What, the iPhone 5s can't take criticism? Is it deemed off limits by the Apple fans?

Lol Haalcyon liked every post against me. Fine by me, some people can't handle the truth. This was a simple rant thread

We most certainly can. Though after a while, it tends to degenerate into one-sided bashing if we don't get to hear the other side of the story.

Doesn't really make for a balanced or informed debate, IMO.

I agree. I just said that because that guy said get a life and stop hating on the 5s. If Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and all other phones can be criticized, I would hope we could criticize the iPhone.

I don't see what's stopping you. And this is coming from someone who uses primarily Apple products.

Well, I wouldn't right off 64-bit processing capability so quickly. It's coming to Android next year with the next-gen ARM stuff. It's a big deal as far as forward thinking goes.

But nice rant. You said everything that everyone else has ever said about iPhone's since they started falling behind with the 4S. :thumbs up:

Linux support for ARM64 been in works for quite sometime now

Linux/arch/arm64/ - Linux Cross Reference - Free Electrons

I don't know if it works (As it started based on ARM32 and based on specifications when there was no existing CPU). So Android been going this way for quite sometime :) ..but Apple got it first :p I bet if some Android phone got it Android fans would praise it to and say how Apple missing it

Probably. If you have it why not praise it? It isn't such a big deal anyways. 64 bits, yaaaay *spoken in monotone*. I've had that on my pc for ages, and I also have a 32 bit to compare to. It doesn't make as a big a difference as one would expect.

ARM won't support it until next year though. They just aren't ready for it.

My main gripe about the fingerprint scanner is the apparent loss of opportunities. So far, it seems like I can only use it to unlock my phone and authorize purchases. What about using it in lieu of my login id and password to enter secure websites (something like one password)? What about locking certain apps (like mail or settings) so only I can access them?

Apple's strength had always been its ecosystem, and I feel it is a great waste not to integrate this feature more deeply into the OS.

That said, I wonder if we will also see this scanner in the iPad?
I doubt it, iPad mostly stays home, while iPhone is with you all the time, everywhere, hence more security is important.

Well, Apple finally did it. They released the phones we've known about for a while if you've been following the leaks. Honestly though, this release disappointed me. Apple has been falling behind in the market, and that's their fault. I think Apple is just throwing in things that are worthless without actually fixing the reason why people are switching away from the iPhone. Allow me to bring up the A7 processor. Apple is saying that this new 64 bit processor is the first of its kind, and it's absolutely revolutionary. I'm not seeing that, I'm seeing it as something that is just gimmicky. Samsung is planning on releasing a new version of the Exynos processor, which will boast full capabilities of the 8 cores and optimization to use all of the cores at once splitting up the tasks. That's what I call real innovation, a phone with that processor will slice through any process you throw at it without a hiccup. I'm not doubting the iPhone 5s will be lightening quick, I'm just saying a 64 bit processor isn't as amazing as Apple makes it out to be.

Another gimmicky thing Apple has added to the iPhone series is a finger scanner. Android has attempted that a long time ago, and there's a reason why we don't see it on phones. It's not really that secure, anyone with a black and white scan of your finger on a piece of paper can get into your phone. On top of that, Apple has made the finger scanner able to authorize purchases. Great job lads! I'm sure that the thieves of the world will use this to their advantage. And now the final thing that really disappointed me about the iPhone 5s release was the same size same ppi screen. Really Apple? And you're wondering why people are switching to the HTC one and Galaxy s4... The screen is too small! I hope that rumor about a possible 6 inch iPhone is true, otherwise Apple could be facing some issues down the road. There are many other things I could rant about, but I'm not going to write a novel. This is just my opinion, it doesn't mean the iPhone 5s isn't a great phone. I felt like ranting a bit and giving my honest opinion of the phone to you guys

The fingerprint scanner is very different than anything out there. You can't fool it unless you have the persons actual finger.
