My thoughts on Wireless Charging

Re: couldn't live without

While it does require a pad it still is wireless from the phone to the pad. It still isn't the best for some but others love it. I know when I had one in the house I loved coming home and placing my phone where I always do and it just charged :).

Many things described as "wireless" involve wires at some point.
I would consider wireless as a description of one point in the process, where it is lacking a wire normally present.

True.. wifi requires a wire to a modem and a router.

Correct..I think the distinction people argue about is they would like to see a gap of a few feet to transmit power wirelessly. Effectively what we have now is not much different than dropping a phone in cradle with electrical contacts similar to what we do with other cordless equipment except that by using a charging pad or a stand we are less precise with the positioning of item being charged with the charging receptacle.

It is actually possible, just very inefficient.

Though there is the interesting implementation of devices which can be powered sort-of by the transmission of others, ambient backscatter.

Remember back when solar calculators first came out? We had already made the leap from plug-in power to reasonably portable battery-operated (hey that makes them wireless). Now with solar, no more changing batteries! (as long as you have enough light).

Our current wireless charging system is probably more of a gimmick than anything due to the close proximity required, meaning the benefits are very limited. But I'm sure it's a stepping stone to something (no idea what) that will be much better such as not having to think about charging at all.

Fuel cells. I really thought those would be in mainstream use by now.
