Just curious if anyone has heard any news with regards to the Nook Color receiving an official update to 2.2,2.3 or 3.0. In my searches on the net, I can only locate news from the December time frame stating that it will receive an update in the 1st quarter of 2011. I know there was a firmware update in January to 1.1, but not sure if this is the update the news articles are referring to.

I have rooted my stock nook and I am content at the moment (tried the HC SD method, but was not successful), but was just curious as to a possible official update timeline.

*If this is posted somewhere else, I apologize for the redundancy*

Related to your update path question.

I was in a B&N last week picking up a case. I have been very curious about the B&N staff's take on rooting/hacking the NC so I let it drop while talking to the sales lady about the case.

She was very interested and hoped that I didn't get the protection plan because it was useless if it was hacked up. She also warned that I back up because there was an update coming, she had no details when I pressed her on it, and it would un-do my root. I'm running CM7 so I'm not scared.

It was a pleasant conversation.

She did also say that B&N is releasing a NookColor 3G soon but again, no details. That was a rumor that I hadn't heard before though.

Back to your update question though, I can say that I'm running the latest nightly (v21) of CM7 (Gingerbread, 2.3.3) and it's rock solid.
The only thing that doesn't work on it for me is YouTube and they are actively working on that. Actively as in there are test builds out with it working, they just aren't part of the nightlies yet.

If you want to hack it up that much that is.

I was at B&N last night and spoke with the Nook specialist about a few things and broached the subject of future updates. He said that the next update will not happen until the second half of April. I asked how he knew about it and he explained that he was just informed Monday that there is an updated training class for the NC in 3 weeks for employees. Not sure how valid this is, but I assume if the "specialists" are getting and updated training class, then an update worthy of training is not far behind.

I recall over on the XDA forums that they had a file whose name you could change via Root Explorer (or similar) so that the updates would not happen automatically. This would allow you to run rooted stock 1.1 (or whatever you have) until someone in the development community comes up with a root procedure for the new BN release (1.1.1 or whatever it will be called). Right?

From what i have read, B&N will update the nook and it very well might be 2.2, but they do not intend it to be an open froyo tablet. Rumor is they want their own market of apps tailored for the book exclusively. Im sure if they do release an update that is 2.2 it will be rooted soon after app then even more apps should work. However, the december news release was misleading as they will not be releasing 2.2 as we know it.

I'll throw my two cents in here too; I spoke to the project manager for the Nook Color about a month ago (give or take a few days). Here's a quick summary of the convo:
- They don't care if you root; they can't honor a warranty because they can't control how you ran the settings, but they were open to me discussing buying the devices and rooting them.
- It isn't their intentions to brick your device you if you do root; they can't promise however, that the update will not unroot your nook. Nor can they promise how the Nook Color will react to the upgrade based on how you rooted your device. There are too many variables for them to work on to update the device they can't possibly handle all of them.
- They are coming out with their own app store; with a limited amount of apps in it. Developers are programming apps for the app store, but it will not have the same mass amount as the Android Market. (My interpretation - They want to focus on a limited amount to ensure great user experience, while the rooted community might object, the target demographic for the device will generally be users who want to read books and do some light internet/games, not a full blown tablet.)
- He couldn't give me a time line for the update, other than in few months or so.

Heard a variation on this myself two nights ago. The "Nook Guru" as the manager calls him stopped me while looking for a slipcover case and asked how my rooted Nook was working. We discussed Froyo on emmc, and that was what he had been experimenting with. Then he dropped this nugget - by summer they'd be releasing a software update that would enable 3g just like the mono version. I asked if he meant a new Nook Color and he was adamant it would unlock "dormant" features in the current model - the problem was just figuring out how to structure the data plans...guess we'll see...but I'd bet it is more likely it will be a new NOOKColor 3g with a tightly capped plan (geared towards book downloads.

Wouldn't the devs have discovered any dormant features within the NC by now, though?

A 3G model would be kind of cool, but honestly, its another data plan to have to pay on. I've been "hot-spottin'" my rooted ATRIX 4G with my NC & my wife's iPad2. I do have the $25 2GB plan, though. As far as a new 3G model altogether, it wouldn't surprise me. Apple has proven that ppl are gullable enough to buy the same device over & over again:)
