I recently had an htc evo that was rooted. I had it replaced thru warranty at sprint and they gave me a brand new one out of the box. I downloaded the revoked3 app and tried to root this new evo. It said that the root was successful however it wasnt. it goes right back into normal stock bootup mode. I then moved on to download another rooting tool called simpleroot.. tried it. I got to step two, and it keeps saying the file that was pushed to the sd card cant be found. i restored sd card and tried it again. same thing. Then I went to look for another rooting tool and didnt have much luck. Is there anyone out there who has any suggestions on how to actually successfully root this evo ?

Android 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-g59b9e50
Build 3.30.651.3

I need any help that anyone can give or suggest.. thanks so much in advance for your help.

Well.. for one Simpleroot doesn't work with 2.2 on the Evo at all. It only works with 2.1. Two, don't use unrEVOked. But since you already used it I have no idea what it did to your phone so I can't really give any advice other than unroot and root the right way by using the sticky in the hacks section. Someone that's used unrEVOked successfully might be able to chime in I guess..

Also... do you have the hardware version 004?

^ what he said!

BUT... MY question is... did you use unrevoked forever? apparently you need that as well. Unrevoked is tricky when it comes to full root.

If you want to use simpleroot, the reason you got that message is because youre supposed to revert your phone to 2.1, then run simple root. You return to 2.1 by "pushing" certain files to your SD card thru the adb. If you didn't do that, you can't use simpleroot. There aren't any other real tried and true methods.

You won't find much here on unrevoked. You might try XDA, they have better info on it. Other than that... you need to run the RUU and start all over again.

Before you do anything else... power down. Then power on holding the volume down button. then choose recovery, see if you have nandroid there... if you do, you should be good.

also, Did you install busybox from Rom Manager?

if it boots up like normal its because you haven't flashed another ROM... unless you have, then that's weird and something isn't right...

what's your HBoot? you didn't list it and that's important to know now a days when it comes to rooting...

I took it into sprint and the techs there did a check none of the roots didnt take. the unrevoked didnt and obviously the simple root didnt since im on 2.2 thanks for that info i didnt know it only worked on 2.1 i had the techs reset the android or re install the stock 2.2 software like it came out of the box.

I am using the hardware version 003

I dont have the nandroid and it boots like it normally would. How do i find the hboot I have ?

And I havent installed busybox from rom manager.

Thanks for the info im new to all of this

my bad, busybox is from titanium backup...

check the stickies up top. there are two you need to read. the one about new hboots and the root sticky.

return to v2.1, then use simpleroot...

the sdk can be found on developers.android.com
