Need Help Please - Driving me crazy :(

Hello so i bought a nice new samsung galaxy s4 at local cellular service store. Everything is fine. i hear apps, notifications, music. im able to use google to talk to it to find me stuff. So it hears me. But it's completely different when i got a call this morning from a friend i was able to pick it up. i could not hear her and she couldn't hear me. Been looking up issues and nothing really helpful on google search. i checked the speaker plug and nothing is stuck in there. i did a factory reset. once i got the phone back up online before updating current apps i was able to hear on the phone and talk back. But once i updated like google app, and google +, and other apps with phone that is recommended. It went back to the problem. So it seems like an app problem possibly? If so what can it be? i tried doing what i saw online about disable from any screen "ok google" detection in google app. And still nothing. Can anyone please help me. its driving me crazy lol.

Turn off Bluetooth! try it again. If that is not the problem I would return it to the seller!
