Need help

Q... I know you are referring to me. He told me he was rooted.. I had him try stock kernels. They didn't work. He said he was stock 2.1. After kernels didn't work I told him I wasn't sure and to ask you. No one else WAs on and I had him try things I knew wouldn't brick him. I also told gin to nandroid early on.

Yeah I saw that, wasn't just referring to you I've read a lot of things this morning from this site and a few others with people giving bad advice and spewed. lol no issues man! Sorry :o

So he rolled back to 2.1 stock and his phone was still in a boot loop? If you rolled back with that PB31IMG he should just pull the battery and see if it boots. If not follow the steps in my previous post.

OK... no harm.. I really felt I was helping him. He said hboot wasn't recognizing pb zip which really got me. He really didn't read enough to start... live and learn.

Yeah. It should have picked up the PB31IMG.zip . If it didn't he has bigger issues.

It's fine ignore the message you just need adb and the drivers, it should download anyways. If it doesn't want to do it right, go into settings and check mark "Force https://...sources to be fetched using http://..."

Ok, how do I install this stuff? If I plug my phone in to the computer with usb cable it's won't recognize it because it doesn't turn on

....................whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa wait, you're phone doesn't turn on at all? If it doesn't turn on at all you have a bricked phone my friend.

No it does turn on, just gets stuck in the boot loop when I turn it on, and because of that when I plug it in to my computer it it's not recognizing. I'm using and Eris to put the zip files on my SD card

Whew ah ok......

Here we go.

#1. Pull battery out of Incredible.
#2. Place it back in. See if it still boot loops. If so, then remove battery again and place it back in.
#3. With the phone turned off, press and hold volume down + power until a white screen shows up. This is called hboot.
#4. Once in hboot select recovery.
#5. Clockworkmod should start, black screen green letters.
#6. In the menu you should see "mount usb storage". Once in this menu your computer can see your sd card as a drive again. This is where you can move files back and forth. Once you exit that mount menu it disconnects it from the computer.

Now that we have gotten this far, we need to see if your computer can see your phone. With your phone in the clockwork menu your computer should be showing it as an 'adb device' in device manager. If it's seeing it as unknown of 'Android phone' or something along those lines you will need to install the drivers you downloaded with the sdk. They are in the usb_drivers folder in the sdk root.

Then open up a command prompt. 'cmd' in either the run box on XP, or in the "search" box on the Vista /7 start menu.

Once it opens type in: (Don't type in the 'enter' part)

cd/ 'enter'
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools 'enter'
adb devices

It should return your phone and a device number, if so you have the drivers correctly installed and you are ready to go. Let us know when you get this far.

This is where you can start following this:

Only major issue you are going to have is if your phone no longer has clockworkmod on it. If it's not there you may be screwed.

You will not believe this but I am a moron (well you can believe the moron part for not doing more research but that's not the unbelieveable part), when I put the PB31IMG zip on my SD card, I wasnt extracting it. I was just copying and pasting it the way I downloaded it. Now it's like I have a new phone.

Oh my we could have been done 15 hours ago... oh well maybe you should leave the rooting alone for a while... at least until you study hard..

ROFL.....absolutely wonderful. When you downloaded it it should have been named "PB31IMG.zip" which is how it should have stayed. It doesn't need to be extracted beyond that. So I take it, it had another name inside another zip or something?

Either way! Great! I was thinking this was going to take awhile, now I don't feel like, "I have to get this guys phone working!"......whew no more refreshing lol.

Yeah in the folder there was a read me file as well. I think that's what it was. Thank you so much for your help and to NoobTube as well. I think I'm gonna just root with unrevoked and not install anything else. Just remove the apps I don't like.

lol no you are ok. Things like this is what makes you learn stuff. Keep messing with stuff just read before you do it. Don't just jump in head first.

I won't go in head first anymore. Backups are a must from now on

Yes always do those backups. In fact, before you do ANYTHING else run your nandroid backup. When you restore from it all your apps, data, settings, blah blah blah will be restored. But on top of that, because you eventually will want to try other ROMs, get titanium backup. That way when you flash a new ROM you can just install the apps you had plus the data from them. Bing bang boom......live and learn don't let it scare you off from messing with it!

After reading all of this... I'm really confused why some one would zip a zip... haha... oh well we live we learn congrats on the fix...
