Ok so i am in the process of buying this house it is completely renovated on the inside brand new everything, but the outside is dreadful. The front of the house is flat and boring and the backyard is depressing. I have about $10k to work with. Are there any landscapers or weekend warriors that have any suggestions?

Congrats on the house! If it were me, I would forgo the landscape and grab some trendy paint, along with building out something from the door, like a nice dramatic walk way overhang. Have fun!

Thanks...... yeah i like pergolas , i think that would look good in the back. In the front i have no idea what could be done in that small area.

That tree is established, and would be a pain to move. Maybe pergola on the side and some matching pergola trim over the windows and door in front? All kinds of things you could do!

Lose the tree, shrubs and chain-link fence in the front. Lush grass will do wonders! Some small/low maintenance colorful plants in front will jazz it up. Congrats on the new digs. :D

I almost have to agree.. Drop the chain link fence to give it a bigger feel and appearance and work with some small colored plants/shrubs to dress it up.

Concentrate on the backyard, after all that is where you and the family will be spending most of your time anyways.

Whatever ya do, post pics when you get finished!

A nice fire pit in the backyard, a cobble or stone walk way (real cute if you have kids, create it out of concrete and have them leave handprints and a favorite pebble or small toy), the back porch is dreary with the concrete slab, maybe add some colorful patio furniture, or a swing with hanging shrubs.

The back is really personal choice, as it is your area, do what makes you feel good.

The front, I would consider just doing something with the upper half to give it some punch, and perhaps add some sort of cover over the entry way. I would consider removing the clapboard and add something with more interest, like fish scale shingles, and/or maybe some "gingerbread" to the peak, and some decorative flower boxes to the windows instead of the shutters. I wouldn't go all out in making it a Gingerbread cottage, but for some inspiration look around at sites like this: MVCMA - Cottages for Sale or Rent The degree to which you would like to make it pop to fit into (or stand out from) your neighborhood would determine the colors and/or degree of decoration. :)

Oh, and after looking again. You should consider adding some windows to the back of the house to help the looks, and give you more light inside.

Congrats on the house. You should call HGTV or stock the local hardware stores for Yard crashers crew
