Hi,

I am hoping that someone has a workaround requiring ODIN/USB connectivity to update xxxxmodem.tar

In my case - I need to go back to stock without USB connectivity. Long story short, my Fascinate will not get recognized over USB so I cannot use ODIN. Resetting phone multiple times and cleaning cache did not help. I have tried all know trick - as updating Samsung drivers, settings etc. I have tested a different Fascinate with my setup - and it gets recognized right away.

In my case I was able to use update.zip from SD card to go back. I am almost there except the modem/Radio. Has anyone been successfull in updating modem WITHOUT Odin?

Thanks in advance

I could be wrong, but as far as I know, it can't be done. Only Odin can flash modem files.

Now, about your connectivity issue, several weeks ago, I experienced the same thing - my computer would not recognize the phone, and the phone would not recognize that it was connected to the computer.

I managed to get it working again my manually removing *all* samsung software and settings. If you want to give it a try, here's what you need to do:

First uninstall the samsung drivers normally though add/remove programs. Then start up the registry editor (run>regedit). Search for "samsung" and even after uninstalling the drivers, you'll probably see your registry is still littered with settings from samsung. You'll need to remove *all* of these.

Hopefully you won't run into the permission problems I did, where it wouldn't allow me to remove a lot of the keys, but there was a workaround and I was finally able to get rid of everything.

Once you can search the registry and find no reference of samsung, restart your computer and phone. Reinstall the samsung drivers and connect your phone. It *should* be recognized now.

From what I could gather from the settings in the registry, samsung's drivers are a total mess - they list the phone as a phone, as an Android device, as a USB storage, as USB flash drive and as a CD drive. With how convoluted they are, I think it's easy for things to get messed up and then Windows doesn't know how to see the phone.

Anyway, give this a try and let us know how it goes. I think it's your only way of getting a new modem file on your phone.

i have never seen a way to flash a modem with out odin.

try creating a new user account on your pc. have you tried connecting on another pc?

@ Chris and Mike

I have tried all option including messing up with the registry. I have also tested my current computer USB connection by connecting different Fascinate - it got recognized right away.

When you try to use Odin, what happens? Does your phone go into Download mode properly? Do you get a yellow COM box in Odin? Unfortunately, Odin is the only way to flash tar and md5 files to your phone.

To test this further, try to see if ADB can recognize the phone. You need to have USB Debugging enabled, or to be in recovery mode first.

Follow DroidXcon's [How to] Quick ADB thread for instructions if you need them.

Once you have ADB up and running, run the "adb devices" command. If it recognizes it, you should see your phones serial number in the list of devices. From there, you might be looking at a kernel issue with your phone (I've had ones that gave me USB issues like this in the past) which can be replaced in CWM. If it doesn't you're definitely looking at a driver issue with your PC.

First of all thank you everyone for your suggestions

I can initiate download mode with Yellow triangle. Odin never sees any Com ports available, when I run it. When I plug pnone into USB I hear chime on the phone and on the computer - but get Unknown device pop up in Windows. SD card does not pop up under My Computer as a new drive. I am able to charge my phone over USB connected to my computer.

I have reset my phone sevral times through samsung recovery console and CWR. I am able to run update.zip and initiate CWR :red 2.5x or purple 3.x depending on the update file that I use.

I downloaded quick adb - running adb devices returns nothing. List of devices attached is empty.

I had my wifes phone last night trying to get it to hook up with the computer and it wouldnt do anything. NO unknow device or anything just the chime and i kind of wiggled the usb right were it is connected to the phone and bam it worked. I didnt do it hard so like to brake it just little moving around and it worked give that a try never know it could work.
