#neveragain boycott and lawsuit

I was in the same boat about upgrading. I have been on the TrulyEpic ROM and it is Fantastic!!!!! I have had zero issues. Try it..... You will be very happy....

Read the thread about the ROM and go thru all of the questions and answers. You will learn alot about what people were needing and how the chef fixed them.

Me too! Had never rooted or anything before I heard about the trulyepic 1.2. Installed it and everything works great! No more airplane mode trick and the gps works even better now!! Try it, you won't be disappointed.

I think boycotting is appropriate but lawsuit maybe too strong a word or action.. point made. we shouldn't have to root if we want froyo. at the same time froyo is no miracle either. will be great to have, but in any event samsung made a solid phone.

this isn't the palm pre.

I don't see any point to a lawsuit. Samsung is not obligated to provide updates (froyo by year-end was never promised to me). The way you make your voice heard is with your wallet. If you don't like their products, don't buy them.

Coming from a Treo 755p, I love having the phone, and the screen is awesome. Having said that, I would rather have bought the Evo, and will likely stay away from Samsung phones due to a continued lack of ability to provide timely upgrades. Froyo includes a number of features I really enjoy. I gave up waiting and upgrade to froyo roms with DK28 a couple of months ago. I am able to enjoy the upgrades, but since the release is not official, no source code has been released. As such, developers can't provide custom kernels. So, in exchange for having froyo, my battery life on custom Roms is much worse than it was using Baked Snack (eclair).

A lawsuit over Froyo would be superfluous. The phone isn't faulty without it. I'm personally running midNIGHT v 2.9 w/ EXT4 and I don't regret it one bit. Once I fixed the gps everything is running better than ever. I even achieve 4 foot accuracy from my gps. With 2.1 I never locked on closer than 30 feet. Take the plunge guys, and I bet even when an official froyo update comes out you won't want to go back to the stock world :-).

Has anyone started anything like this for the Epic? Or for any other carrier other than T-Mobile? I know some people are going to feel this is taking it too far, but I myself think that it is necessary. No...we shouldn't expect updates for our phones UNLESS we have been TOLD by sellers that we will receive a certain update. False advertising is false advertising no matter how you sugar coat it....and every carrier PROMISED that Froyo would be released for these phones. Wheter it is Samsung or the carriers....it doesn't matter....a promise was made to customers and it hasn't been (and isn't close to being) delivered. Add to the fact that there has been no explanation beyond the typical "we're working on it" response is just asking for a lawsuit.

Yes the phone works fine out of the box (with the exception of a few bugs). And yes we are minority of users on these forums as opposed to the other 90 percent of customers. But that does not omit the fact that broken promises were made for sales. I think this is the perfect way for these companies to understand just how upset we are as customers (even though Samsung probably doesn't care because of their customers in other countries), along with people not buying their products.

I shouldn't have to root to compensate for these companies' lack of interests in their customers' satisfaction. Samsung is aware of our communities, and if they really cared about getting these updates out on time and with HELP (reducing the load on themselves) they would at LEAST release the souce code and play both sides of the OPENESS defense that so many people use when Android fragmentation is brought up and custom UI's (such as Touchwiz). If they wanna claim that Android is open and sign an agreement to adhere to the Open Handset Alliance, they would release the source code and not simply DRIVERS for THE PEOPLE to decide whether they want the Touchwiz crap as their UI.

Sorry for another rant...just had to vent.

Just root your phone and install Froyo. The process is fairly simple...and then you wont wake up everyday upset at the fact that you havent recieved Froyo. I dont recall the carriers ever promising Froyo...nor do I recall Froyo being a selling point for the phone. Samsung stated it would be released but I dont recall that being said by the carriers.

Whether it was promised or not...we dont have it...a lawsuit isnt going to get it in our hands any quicker...and Froyo adds NOTHING that you're paying for in your monthly service. So take matters into your own hands and make your phone how you want it. Thats the beauty in Android.

Just root your phone...

ok to those that keep saying it...

How about you buy a brand new expensive car and then be your own mechanic?!

yes we CAN root, flash roms, themes, kernels, etc. ...yes we CAN! but that is not the point! when you pay a lot of $ for something thats top of the line you expect some support (in this case - bug fixes).

exactly!

i'll tell you why OFFICIAL froyo is important to me... yes, i have dk28 running on my epic, and its buggy as hell! i bought epic bc it has a FFC (so does evo, i know...) so i can talk to my gf and our daughter. video calling was a major selling point for me. well, newsflash! qik is not an option. iphone 4 is still the only one on ATT with FFC. so its either Fring or yahoo im. yahoo doesnt connect at all! Fring works but my cam is 90* sideways and is inverted backwards! so when we talk its messed up!! ...and im not even gonna go into the headache flashing and reflashing to fix the damn gps, and fixing the many apps absent from market, including the ones paid for.

video calling is the most important feature for us. untill we get official froyo these bugs will not be addressed. major, major fail for samsung!

so i spent a lot of $ expecting to get an important feature "in the coming months" that i am not really getting. obviously i cant return the phone, so im stuck with this bs until september.

i usually dont praise apple, but at this point im beginning to agree with my friends who say "it just works how its supposed to".

Lol. The car analogy was terrible considering the technological and mechanical differences between your Epic and your car. You're not "fixing" something when you root...you're enhancing it. A more accurate comparison would be modding your car. At least then you have the option to either take it upon yourself to make your experience to your liking...or deal with it. Qik has worked fine for me even before rooting my phone. And so when happens if Froyo doesn't fix that? Do w start crying about Gingerbread not being on our phones?

People just amaze me...ok...so you feel you shouldn't HAVE to root your expensive device. Well then stop complaining. Its basically been shown that there are a lot of people more than satisfied with the work our dev community has put in. Consumers aren't guaranteed anything in other than a product business. The lack of Froyo isn't hindering us from anything. You had 30 days just like the rest of us. I knew what I liked and didn't like in that time...yet I kept my phone. Stop blaming everyone else for something that you as a consumer could have avoided.

ps after reading this article i feel even more upset. looks like my next phone may actually be the iphone 5 or i'll be back to webos (if hp will have something worthy out by september.)

car analogy was not the best, i know. just couldnt think of a better one. and also my dad's brand new jaguar kept having problems with engine (go figure) but he didnt have to fix it himself, did he?

Qik has worked fine for me

well qik is not available on iphone.

The lack of Froyo isn't hindering us from anything.

actually it is a minimum requirement for yahoo IM video calling (unless they changed that and im not aware of it), and i believe same goes for fring. when i bought epic people were expecting that 2.2 was just around the corner and coming "soon", as it was already out on other devices.

so... no official 2.2 then all you get is a 1 finger gesture from either company's support. just saying.

A better car analogy would be one where there's a known issue with a car engine (say, valve timing) that's fixed by a hacked engine computer configuration, which to me is similar to the GPS on the Epic being fixed by installing a rooted ROM.

Now, of course, it's great that folks have put in the time to cook the ROM, just like it's great when folks take the time to hack engine computer code and fix an issue. But, the manufacturer should be fixing these issues themselves. And, of course, in both cases new issues can be introduced by going the hacked/rooted route.

That's not to say that adding new features and such is necessarily the manufacturer's responsibility. And, if Samsung were to release a fix for the GPS outside of Froyo, I'd be happier. Until they do, though, I do believe the complaints will continue, as they should.

When I had a new, expensive (for me at the time) car I worked on it myself. Changed my own oil and fluids, installed my own cool-air intake, swapped out the cloth seats for custom leather ones, put in a short throw shifter, etc. But I suppose I'm the exception ^_^

I think the biggest issue at hand is Samsung's lack of communication, at least that's how it is for me. I have absolutely zero issue with people being ticked off, frustrated and angry for the whole situation, because everyone has every bit of a right to be.

But like I said for me, it's more about communication. I wouldn't be nearly as aggravated if we just heard from Verizon or Samsung saying "Look this is what's causing the delay, here's why". I'm still happy with my phone and this won't change it, but a little more communication would be a start.

+1 on the communication part. If someone would just stand up and release a statement concerning what is going on they might actually defuse the situation a bit more. I feel the US carriers and Samsung owe everyone that much for buying their products.

To my knowledge that cant be done. I have "bricked" mine and i just ODIN back to stock. It seems you can always get to download mode at least and from there odin back. My phone wouldnt do ****, just a reboot loop that wouldnt ever load anything. Download mode and odin and all is good. Now i dont feel 2.2 is necessary to make this a bad ass phone. I got my game gripper and slingbox and i could be happy with 2.1 easily. But i am running 2.2 b/c i can lol
It can be done but its reallt hard only way I know of is flashing a huge boot logo

I agree. And, here's another (probably controversial) thought: if the issue really is the cost of the upgrade, then Samsung could just tell us when we buy one of their phones that Android point releases will have a cost attached to them. Then, they could make sure to fix outstanding bugs (such as the GPS issues in 2.1, not to beat a semi-dead horse here), and then we customers could choose whether the upgraded features were worth the cost.

Now, if the story is true (and I do have my doubts), we're being held hostage to what could be protracted negotiations. And most certainly, we're not being told the truth when when both Sprint and Samsung have alluded to technical issues with the update.

I think it really is about past time that they come clean with the update's status. Otherwise, this whole thing is starting to stink to high heaven and it's going to end up being a real PR problem for both companies.

If this story was completely true, why would sprint pay for the update on the Samsung Intercept and ignore their top of the line phones?

I am all for the lawsuit... I'd love to see a group of people target samsung on false advertising. It might actually get somewhere!

Good stuff.

It's one of the reasons I did not buy a samsung. For me it came down to a samsung or a HTC. After researching both and reading peoples problems, ie: GPS and the samsung was still Android 2.1 it was a no brainer. Thanks to forums like this it helped me make an informed choice. Hopefully the lawsuit will at least get everyone an update. But when it comes time to upgrade from your samsung I doubt a lot of people will buy another!

Cheers,

I, personally, have never had an issue with the GPS... I think that is user error on the Epic (maybe not so much on the GSM phone, which has different GPS chip). HTC will never see a cent from me again, despite how awesome its dev community is. The hardware just sucks. I don't see what the hoopla is over the 800mHz processor. I don't think its smooth, and considering it has to push a much smaller screen, it just should be (has to do less work). I'm not impressed with anything HTC has coming out, or currently has. I feel I currently have the best hardware on the market, just waiting for software to catch up... and it already has, just waiting on whatever the real hold up is between samsung and US carriers.
