New Captivate Owner - Hello and my first impressions.

Yeah the Captivate really can be a superb phone. Just have to do minor tweaks to it and it runs great. Unfortunately so many people see one or two issues as being deal breakers and I just laugh. It is amazing that so many people complain about GPS, when for the last how many thousands of years we have only had GPS for what, 15-20 if I am even close with that number.

Too date I have yet to have a smart phone that I did not have to tweak to work the way I wanted, and hopefully you don't see the minor issues as being deal breakers. Read on xda forum and just play with settings, and root! The phone is really great.

Funny I thought I recognized some handles. I also came from a bold and from crackberry. Still using same name here has I used there.
I am using my bold case for now and the phone fits ok. I also don't miss the keyboard, that was my biggest fear because my sons storm I had trouble with. All I can say is try swype give it a couple of days. Keep reading the tips and go to the swype site. Look at the videos they have there, in about a week you will love it.
I looked at the torch and my friend who is here right now is kicking himself for getting it yesterday. He thought he was going to stick it in my face for getting the captivate. Now he is having second thoughts. Though he is going to hold on to it for a couple of weeks.
Still I do miss the ease of hooking it to the computer and know it is working. So far I have had no luck using the software. I also miss the ability to talk for my phone to dial a contact for me. I can't believe or understand why samsung or att don't have software or an app to do this.
The voice recognition is superb on this phone. Most of the time I talk to text, make emails or post on forums. So far it picks up almost every thing I say.
If you find that your mail don't come fast enough, try the maildroid app. It has really sped things up, still it doesn't give you everything but it helps. Plus the developer is up on supporting the app, and he answers his mail.
Other than that I also have vision problems and this is a life saver, plus this plays great with my hearing aid, though I find the speaker and volume are really good.
Hey no more hour glass or battery pulls to get memory back or fix a froze phone. So far his torch has stopped twice, lags on changing apps and it still has the same size screen without the clarity of the captivate.

Came from a BB Curve 8310. Liked that phone a lot but started missing out on wifi and 3g and just generally more "fun" phones. Upgrade was available about a month ago, was holding out for the BB 9800 Torch, couldn't take waiting any longer and messed with a live demo of the Captivate about 2-3 weeks ago. 5 minutes later I was using my upgrade to get it. Its an amazing phone, forgot all about BB. I was able to resolve my GPS issues with some minor tweaks. I'm already rooted and playing around with it a lot.

Do put me on the "I miss the notification LED" group though..

I was a BB 9700 user. Like others, my 47 year old eyes just got tired of reading the micro print. Got a Nexus One and really didnt like several thing about it, like the screen in sunlight and other little things. Went to an iphone 4 for 3 weeks and gave it to my daughter who is an iphone fan. Too many dropped and missed calls. THEN I picked up a new BB Tourch 9800 with touch screen. I wa so excited....for about 1 hour....I realized I hated that phone! Keyboard way too small to be accurate. Overall the phone was just too busy!

Went in and exchanged the Tourch for the Captivate. This phone is a dream compared to other phones Ive been through lately!

Hey Mike,
As much as the I want to check out the torch, from the reviews and after seeing what you said about the Torch, I don't even really want to check it out because I love my captivate and it seems the torch from what I have read and heard from friends who looked at them that it was slow compared to even an iPhone 4 as well as the captivate. As for jumping from bb over to android, I dont think I can ever go back as it stands. I don't miss the battery pulls/reboots because of the memory leaks. The 3G to Edge hand off is a lot better in Android versus blackberry. Just way too many positives on the Android Platform versus blackberry. Not saying blackberry is bad, but android does a lot more better.

HTH,
Charlie

I've had mine for a week now. I really love it and don't miss the bold. Glad to hear from people who tried the torch but still like the captivate better. Makes me feel like I made the right decision.

The only change I would make to the capitvate is making the buttons at the bottom physical rather than touch.

I think I found the perfect case for me. Leather wallet pda style that folds closed to protect the screen. Just waiting for someone to make one for less that $40.

First post... just came across this forum just now :D; I, too, came from CrackBerry. I currently have an 8310, but with all the web browsing/Googling I like to do on the fly, Edge and the scroll ball just wasn't cutting it anymore. I was 100% set on getting the iPhone 4 (screen, camera, simplicity were so attractive) until my curiosity lead me to look up what the Android was about. I knew nothing previously about it, but after reading on and on and discovering that AT&T just came out with the Captivate, I fell in love after watching many videos and reading reviews.

I should be getting it within a week or so, can't wait

Same here. Came from crackberry.com and was a pretty strong crackberry addict. So far I'm hooked on my captivate although slightly concerned over battery life. The customization on this thing is awesome and I've had a great time tweaking things to get it just how I want it. I'm not sure there's anything that I'm missing after making the switch except perhaps BlackBerry Messenger. Even the concerns I had without a physical keyboard are gone.

I was the same way, never really paid attention to Android because of what ATT had to offer. After going to look at the iPhone4 one day I saw the Captivate and played with it. My wife was dead set on the iPhone4 and after showing her this she wanted one. So that is what we did and we couldn't be happier. This is such a great phone.

^^ I hope I can do the same and get my wife hooked on this phone. Ordered one for her she is set on the iPhone 4 but with the shortages and issues she may love this. Plus picking it up for 49.99 is a bonus

So you don't mind that ATT just introduced the latest and greatest BB Torch? ;)

I know you were joking but after playing with my friends this weekend and a side to side comparison. Forget about it, there just ain't no way I will get one.
He just went back to get another one because of things not working right. I will bet he will get a captivate instead of waiting till his 30 days are almost up.

After having my 3GS for 3 weeks and reading through these forums I am returning my iPhone for the Captivate. I had the Incredible but left verizon because AT&T has much better coverage where I live and work. My Incredible got 1 bar in the house!

I probably would have considered the iPhone 4 if it was even possible to get your hands on. But like I said after reading what people had to say and using the captivate for about an hour at the store I am going back tomorrow to get it. The Captivate seems so much better built than most HTC phones IMO.

I am happy with my Captivate. In my coverage area, North Atlanta, no problem. GPS works (geocaching). I hace consdierable WIFI access and am using a 2000mg plan. Looking forward to Froyo update. This is my first Android and it works for me. cheaha bill
