As of 2024 it will be compulsory in the Europe Union for all new phones/tablets/cameras etc to have USB-C charging ports.

Smart watches excluded.

I personally think it's a great idea but I doubt Apple feel that good about it.

What do you guys think about it?

Universal standards are often a good thing. The EU did the same thing with electric car charging ports.

I think it's great. It wouldn't matter to me personally, since I don't own any Apple products. However, I have loads of USB C charging cables so it would be great for me if I ever were to get an Apple product some day.

So I guess this means no more innovation, the EU has deemed USB-C as the epitome of connections? Universal standards are a good thing, but for a government to mandate a specific connection means any future improvements to a better designed port will be banned.

Not a fan of this one.

For what it's worth, the EU have indicated that they will keep abreast of future development and will adapt as seen fit.
We will see.

Don't worry once Apple goes fully wireless charging everyone be on board no more cables .

Yes, that was my way of thinking. They will definitely circumvent it one way or another. Not that it really concerns me as I don't see myself ever using Apple products.

Yeah I have no issues which way they go with this , I use my Samsung wireless charger for my Samsung, pixels,iPhones

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Come 2026, the new EU regulations will expand to include laptops and pretty much all electronic products.
Obviously, products such as smart watches won't be included.

Laptops might be different because most use wall chargers that have different male plugs all over the world.

No Laura, it merely pertains to the power socket on the laptop from the charging transformer. Not the mains power lead from the wall socket.

Pretty sure she was talking about the laptop end, not the wall end.

It doesn't matter though , they only need to be able to charge via USB-C, that doesn't have to be there only means of charging. Manufacturers can still include a barrel connector or whatever for charging.

And how many laptops nowadays can't charge via USB-C?

You're right in both cases. :)

Higher end gaming laptops that run north of 200W power. Don't think USB is there yet, and may never be with its tiny wires.

Some of the engineering-class laptops I'm supporting at work charge over USB-C. These laptops have an nVidia Quadro graphics card in them. Of course- we DO have an even higher-powered engineering laptop that still uses a barrel-style connector OR charges over a dual USB-C connection from a docking station.

They actually WILL charge over USB-C, they just can't be powered using it running full tilt.

Besides, I'm pretty sure you actually understood the part of my post above the part you cherrypicked. You know, the part where they can still ship with a dedicated charger? Basically, nothing will change

So it would appear from my original post that most of you don't have a problem with this EU directive. Neither do I.

Yes, I guess you may feel that innovation could be stifled but surely wireless charging is the way to go and I'm sure that Apple will go with this option.

As far as other products are concerned, i.e. razors, torches, sound boxes etc. then I'm certain that USC-C will be quite adequate for the foreseeable future.

The directive also states that future development will be taken into consideration.

Thank you for your responses.
