New Gingerbread Leak EP1W

Just an FYI for anyone reading this thread. I have used ODIN numerous times on my Charge so far and have had no problems getting into download mode, flashing in ODIN, and rebooting my phone all while leaving the battery in the whole time. I know many people say you have to pull the battery first, connect the phone to the usb, get the connection in ODIN, then put the battery back in before flashing. But I have left the battery in through the whole process and haven't had one problem yet. Just saves you the hassle of having to take whatever cover you have off, taking the back off, removing the battery, and remembering to put the battery back in before flashing.

For some reason I can never get into download mode with the battery in the phone(Ive tried numerous times and the phone just continues through the boot process). What is nice about the ROM I am on now is that there is an option to boot into download mode when you long press the power key.

I never can either from a stock ROM, but as you said, with the power button menu on any of the custom roms, I reboot directly into DL mode and roll from there

the answer is yes and no. If I was in your shoes, here is what I would do to save myself ALL kinds of time.

First follow the sticky on how to root any phone at the top of the forum. That flashes a kernel and will not mess with the OS, apps or data. Once you do that download either mybackuppro (my choice but YMMV) or Titanium backup. Back up all your APKs and Data (not sure about TiBup, but with Mybackuppro, you can backup your call log and text log, I would back those up to)

next I would flash the Rom of my choice (do the research but my preference would be GC 1.91 then onto GC 2.0)

Install whatever backup program you had and do a restore.

If you follow the instructions correctly, you will be close to where you started, only rooted, on a custom ROM and have a faster phone.

When I say that you will be close I mean that. Not all your settings will return, and some of the tweaks you had made won't necessarily return either.

In the long run, you may be better off.

Hey Piizadude, I appreciate this advice, it actually clarified a number of things for me about rooting (I'm a newbie, obviously).

However, I was wondering if you knew of any ways to back up your data without that initial root? You see, while the speed and battery upgrades are certainly enticing, I am also interested in upgrading to Gingerbread because I've heard that it actually has Skype Videochat, which is currently lacking on my factory build Charge (apparently Skype can't figure out how to access the FFC in Froyo). I would prefer not to have to root my phone multiple times, but if I have to, I probably will.

Alternatively, if someone knows of a fix for the Skype issue, I'd love to hear about it. (And no smart ass comments about using a mirror, please :) )

I'm on Froyo (although admittedly rooted as well) and the hacked Skype from here works - including front-facing camera! Apparently since I installed it they have updated the version, which can be found here - I would assume that one would also work, although I cannot attest to that personally. I'm not positive that you would need to be rooted for this to work (the threads linked above should have more info on that), but my gut says that you would at minimum need to have the Unknown sources box checked under Settings > Applications. Hope that helps!

piizzadude, are you refering to this sticky: [ROOT] [KERNEL] [Repost of jt1134] Root,ANY build w/ Voodoo lagfix!*updated*
in your reply to the other question?

If I am getting your question right, then no. That will give you root access to do a variety of things but you would have to go to a customized ROM (Gummy, Humble).

Or another option is an app called quickboot. It will allow you to boot right into download mode.

i was referring to this. when you say the "sticky on how to root any phone at the top of this forum"
is this the right sticky? [ROOT] [KERNEL] [Repost of jt1134] Root,ANY build w/ Voodoo lagfix!*updated*

if you just want to Root and remain stock then yes, that is the stickie to follow. If you want to go directly from stock to a custom ROM, then follow the instructions for the ROM itself. Most of them are just Flashing the rom in ODIN but YMMV

thanks for all the help. i backed up with my back up pro and loaded 2.3.4 it went smooth and was much easier than i though it would be.
