Hello All,

Trying to figure out the best way to root my NC - I need it for an overseas trip. Using it for wifi, travel apps, surfing, Facebook/twitter and reading.........Here are my questions-

1. It's new so do I have a new boatloader that only allows me to install Roms on Sd card?

2. Which should I use? Cyanogen mod, honeycomb ect - emmc or sd card dual boot?

3. What is the latest version of Cyanogen (cm7)? 87 Nightly 100 nightly are those the versions of Cm 7??

4. If I chose the dual boot on SD, do I have to root the NC or am I able to chose how to boot up system? ereader vs andriod

5. Are you able to have dual boot or root (if I have to) on a new NC? It was purchased June 10th 2011.

Thank you all for your help. You are too kind.....sending you the best of Karma!

1. I don't know about that. CWM should be enough to make a bootable card that can be used to install stuff to emmc.

2. I have CM 7.0.3 stable on a card. It works wonderfully but drains the battery more quickly than the rooted 1.1 stock that I have on emmc. For travel you might want to try manualnooter on your stock 1.2 so you have the longest time possible between charges.

As for which ROM is best, you'll just have to read up on their plusses and minuses and decide for yourself. Different people have different needs. Most people either run CM 7.0.3 or HC but the Phiremod folks seem very happy too so I can't say which you should go with.
I will say that it's a no-brainer about sd vs emmc. Use the sd for trying out ROMs. Don't kill your emmc unless you are 100% sure you will never use your warranty because it's a PITA to restore it.
One note, use a sandisk card for running ROMs. Testing has shown that other cards often cause problems. Sandisk class 4 cards can run very nearly as fast as emmc. Class 10 Patriot cards freeze and fc all the time.

3. 7.0.3 is the latest stable. The CM 7 nightlies are up to 101 right now and will likely to go up, well, nightly. Here's the latest and the changelog.

4. I'm not quite sure what to make of this question. First of all, what you are calling ereader is BN's version of Android 2.2 (I think that's the right version but I know it's Android). It already has several tablet functions such as internet, Flash and the ability to run apps from the BN app store. You'll have to see for yourself if going that route will satisfy you. It would certainly be simplest. If you root with manualnooter you will get access to Google's app market. Rooting is a reversible process that is performed on the stock ROM using a microSD card that is removed once the process is finished. It leaves the original interface in place and just allows you to do more different things with it. You will lose the "Read In Store" feature if you root and also the read-aloud children's books. You can get those features back by unrooting. Root cannot be put on a card and dual booted.
You can put CM7, Phiremod, HC, or whatever ROM takes your fancy on a bootable microSD card and your nook should boot from the card first if you have the bootable card inserted. This does not modify your emmc at all. Root is not required. Most newer versions of CM7 include a boot menu so that you can choose to boot from the card or from internal memory without removing the card. I consider xda developers forum the go-to source for definitive answers on these things since that's where the people who create these ROMs are answering questions.

5. I don't know, I don't have one purchased then. I don't see why not though. It works for everyone else. BN OS 1.2 does seem to have a few quirks but the clever folks over on xda devs have answers for pretty much everything.

Good luck!
